Chapter 7: The Sweet as Sugar Ice Cream Parlor

Right now I'm standing at my locker waiting for Evangeline to get here. Her locker is right next to mine so we always meet here after school is finished for the day.

Evangeline, Zane, Logan, Drew (another one of Zane's friends) and I have all our classes together except for last hour. Last hour I have study hall with Zane, and Evangeline has gym with Logan. Drew has I don't know what.

I have been waiting here for ten minutes. Longer than usual. I take out my phone and call Evangeline. It goes to voicemail. Huh... she always answers me.

"Hey Cordeliah." Someone says.

I turn around and see Zane walking toward me.

"Hey Zane." I tell him while glancing at my phone.

He motions to my phone in my hand "you waiting for a call?" He asks.

I sigh. "Yes. I mean, no not really. I called V and she didn't answer. I've been waiting here for like fifteen minutes. I don't know what's taking her so long."

"Doesn't she always answer your calls?"

"This is the first time she hasn't." I tell him.

"Why are you waiting for her anyway?" Zane asks me.

"We always wait here for each other, we were planning on going to get ice cream." I say to him.

"Why don't you just leave then? If she's not here then leave." He tells me shrugging.

I turn to face him. "If you were waiting for Logan so y'all could go set up a prank or something and he didn't show up where you were gonna meet would you just leave?" I ask him.

"Yeah. If he didn't show up, too bad for him." He says.

"Okay, never mind. Zane, she's my best friend, I can't just leave when she doesn't show up. Girls don't do that. I can wait for her until she gets here or until I can get ahold of her." I tell him.

"It amazes me how loyal you two are to each other." He says.

"We're best friends we have to be loyal."

"So you're just gonna wait here until she shows up?" He asks me.

"Yup." I say nodding.

"Then I'm gonna wait with you." He say leaning back against the lockers.

"No it's okay. You don't have to." I tell him.

"But I want to."

"No. You can leave." I say.

"Cordeliah, I'm not leaving." He says stubbornly.

"Yes you are."

"No I'm not."

I sigh. "Fine."

After that we fall into a silence for another five minutes.

I can't take his silence any more so I decide to ask him something I've been thinking about all day.

"Zane? Can I ask you something?" I say hesitantly.

"Yeah. Of course."

"Why- how come- why do you- tell me why-"

"Cordeliah just ask me." Zane say looking at me smiling slightly.

I take a deep breath. "Why do you treat me so differently than you treat Evangeline? We're basically both your sisters." I say finally.

"I don't treat you that different do I?" He asks.

I nod. "You treat me nicer than you treat Evangeline. Like today if Evangeline was freaking out like I was in class you wouldn't do anything. But for me you helped me, tried to get the attention away from me. Why?"
