"Hey! Evans, who's the new girl?" I sit down at the Gryffindor table for breakfast with the girls.
"I can speak for myself." I reply to a blonde haired boy.
"Sorry about him, he doesn't understand girls, even though he grew up with one." An equally blonde haired girl responds, sending a glare at the boy. "I'm his sister. Twin, actually. Elwyn. Elwyn Hayes."
"Ebony Warren, nice to meet you."
"Ellis."
"Pleasure." He gives me a half smile then turns to talk to some other Gryffindor boys.
"Eb? Toast?" Lily passes a rack of toast over. I grab a slice and then take a two sausages, a piece of bacon, an egg and beans.
"Hungry?" Dorcas asks.
"Well I don't want to starve on my first." I joke. "And I thank Marlene agrees with me." Marlene had piled food on her plate.
"Oh, no, that's usual for her." Alice smiles.
"Here comes McGonagall with our timetables." Lily says, and a few seconds later, McGonagall comes round holding a thick pile of paper.
"Evans, Fortesque, McKinnon, Meadowes and Warren." She passes out the timetables. "I will see you all second lesson."
I glance down to seem my timetable to see I have a free period, and then transfiguration.
"Eb, do have the first free too?" Marlene asks.
"Uh yeah."
"Alice and I have Arithmancy." Lily says, putting her timetable in her bag and finishing her cereal.
"Well, Marlene and I could show you around a bit before transfiguration, if you want?"
"Uh... yeah. Yeah, that would be nice." I smile and take a bite of bacon.
After breakfast, Alice and Lily head away to arithmancy with Remus and then Marlene and Dorcas lead me out into the entrance hall, after Marlene had finished her mountain of breakfast.
"So, there are a few few main sections of the Castle. The grounds, west and east wings, dungeons, green houses and towers." Marlene says.
"As well as the Great Hall and the staircases." Dorcas adds.
"Down there is the dungeons, you do potions down there, but apart from that and the kitchens, just stay out of there. Slytherin dorms are down there." Marlene points out.
"The Slytherins are ok, it's just that some of them... well... I'm sure you'll find out." Dorcas heads through into the entrance hall.
The thought hits me before I can stop it. "Are any of them..." I hesitate. "Like.. pure-blood supre-"
"Yes." Dorcas says, sharply. "That's the short answer. Some more than others. Some not at all. But some, definitely."
Both of them look uncomfortably around, as if checking for anyone listening.
"So, up here, as you know, are the staircases." Marlene changes the subject.
They lead me around the east and west wings, the towers and the classrooms, the various staircases and then up to the astronomy tower.
"Tallest tower in Hogwarts. And far too many stairs. With all this magic you would've thought we could come up with an alternative but no, we were forced to trek up here every Wednesday at quarter to midnight. Merlin, I hated astronomy." Marlene grumbles.
"It's worth it for the views though." Dorcas stops ahead of me, on a small platform at the edge of the tower.
I walk up to it beside her, and look out over the Hogwarts castle and grounds below me. The classrooms I had just walked through look small compared to the mountains surrounding us. The Black Lake glistening below, reflecting golden light as the sun shines from the east. Then the Forbidden Forest with a cabin next to a small vegetable patch.
