Ebony POV:

The rest of my first day was nice enough. I had charms lesson four, with Professor Kaya. Well, her proper title was Professor Thoris, but she said that using her surname made her sound like her mother, and she didn't want that. She was... striking. Once you looked past her red-purple hair and one purple eye, she was a nice woman, young, but still an authoritative teacher. The boys starting listening properly when she said she would offer some 'extra-curricular spells, to help those of us who think school is to actually help us in life, and to survive a year after graduation.'

"I like her, she seems to actually care about education and it's proper meaning, rather than just a bunch of theory." Lily said after.

After that, we had lunch, a period spent by me asking questions about Hogwarts, the girls asking questions about Uagadou, and eating far too many of the biscuits served along with the array of sandwiches, soups and pasties.

Then potions, learning about poison antidotes with Slughorn. He seems to be the most 'favoritist' teacher ever. He literally ignored everyone apart from the chosen few like Lily, James, that Snape guy.

He came and talked to me and when I told him I had transferred from Uagadou he suddenly got very interested. He kept on going on about how he had met a young boy - whose name I couldn't be bothered to remember - who got caught using wandless magic and his excuse was that he used a hand gesture and didn't mean it to cause magic. Like we all hadn't used that excuse.

I nodded along, trying to copy down the theory. It would've helped if Dorcas hadn't chimed in going on about my 'insane abilities' in transfiguration. I tried to sound enthusiastic when we offered to let me into one of his 'private get-togethers', but nothing sounded like more of a waste of time.

Needless to say, I was glad to get out that dungeon.

"Hey Ebony, we're gonna go and sit outside, you ok with that?" Lily calls.

"Sure, I'm gonna drop my stuff back off in the dorm, but I'll be down soon."

"Oh, I need to pick up something too, I'll come with you." Alice says.

Together, we head up to the common room. Back up through the entrance hall, up the far-too-many stairs, through the portrait door and into the dorm. Alice goes and rummages through a bag, pulling out a leather bound book. I go to my satchel and pull out a spare quill, and some parchment, including the letter I had started to Larry. Merlin, it seems like ages ago since I walked into the Leaky Cauldron... I really should have written to him earlier, despite everything that's happened.

"Come on, Eb." Alice says by the door.

"Yeah, two secs."

I stuff the things back into the bag and sling it on my shoulder, heading out the door.

We arrive a few minutes later on the grounds, walking up to the side of the lake where Lily, Marlene and Dorcas are. I slump down next to them, and loosen my tie, letting it fall out of it's knot.

"So, Ebony. First day at Hogwarts. What d'you make of it?" Lily asks.

"Well-"

"I know!" Marlene butts in, "There are too many stairs, Slughorn is weird and Snape is a git."

"That's true, well most of it, but wasn't what I was gonna say."

"Hold up, you've met Snape?" Lily asks.

"Yeah, crashed into us in the library." Dorcas says. "Literally crashed if you're talking to Marlene."

"What was he like?" Lily asks, a hint of emotion in her voice.
