-- 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝘃 --

I woke up to my alarm blaring right in my ear. I had made the mistake of putting my phone there last night so I could listen to music and the consequences were now on full display. I didn't have work or school today, but I had a lot of homework I needed to get done. I was in an advanced program for my master's degree and I was desperately trying to finish up my thesis before I had to present it at the end of the school year.

I had music playing softly throughout my apartment as I flipped through my books, gathering notes and typing them out on my computer. Like most semesters, I had started out very organized. I had cute pens in pretty much every color you could think of, perfectly neat little index cards, and coherent notes. Now, my notes were smattered across various Google Docs in random fonts and text colors and my highlighters were drying out, leaving a hazy mess of neon in my books. It was an absolute mess and I knew I needed to try to organize this a little so it would make things easier when I had to put it all together. My phone had been buzzing for a while now, but I was too in the zone to actually check to see who it was. I wish I had though because the sound of a key turning in the lock meant only one thing: Clay.

"Meredith Jane Brown? Are you okay? Where are you? I swear to God, if you're not already dead I will kill you myself," Clay called out as he entered slowly. He sounded like he was scared he was going to find me bleeding out or something. He saw me on the couch and ran over to hug me so tightly I thought he was going to puncture my lung. "I haven't heard from you in like three days or something, what the hell have you been doing?"

"I'm sorry, I've been so busy with school," I said, moving my books and laptop to the coffee table. "I haven't even really looked at my phone."

"You scare me shitless when you do that, you know that," he grumbled, sitting down next to me. He put a hand on my knee and squeezed gently before removing it. "Your mom sent me over here to check on you."

"You don't have to do that," I laughed, "just tell her no when she asks."

"'Just tell her no?' Have you met your mom?" He shook his head a little, trying not to laugh. "My mom would skin me alive if I didn't come over here to check on you too. Plus I actually do get worried. If you died I would need to be institutionalized for a very long time."

"I'm an adult, Clay," I groaned. "Sometimes you go MIA for a few days too and I don't freak out."

"Maybe I'm just a better friend," he pretended to wipe away a tear.

"Whatever," I laughed, shoving him a little. "Thank you for checking on me. I hate it, but I appreciate it."

"No problem, Midge. Love you," he said, hugging me again.

"How long are Nick and George staying?" I asked.

"Probably like a week or so," he said. "I'm trying to get Nick to move in with me though."

"That would be cool!" I grinned, pulling up my legs to sit criss-cross. "They'll be here in three days right?"

"Yeah, Wednesday," he replied. "The days are going by quickly, I still have some cleaning and shit to do."

"Okay cool, my last class is on Tuesday afternoon and I only have to work on Wednesday morning," I said, looking over my planner. The timing couldn't have been any better, I had a week-long break that started a few days after they arrived and I didn't have any classes for a few days before that, so I had ample free time. "I picked up extra shifts last week so I should be okay taking a few days off. What time does Nick get in?"
