"Should I let them off the hook?"
Count Olaf stared at Hooky holding me and my siblings with his hooks for hands. He reluctantly waved his hand and Hooky released us, pushing me forward.
We all took a seat across from him at the end of the table.
"I spent all morning making these cupcakes for you," He lied, holding out the plastic container for us to see.
"They're store-bought," Sunny said, not that the count could understand.
"I received a call from the banker today," Count Olaf continued. "And I've come to realize that I haven't been the best father, so I've decided to allow you four to participate in my troupe's next theater production!"
I slightly perked up among my siblings. After years of seeing theater with my parents, I was about to be given the opportunity to participate in a project. Even if it was with Count Olaf's troupe who had proven to not have been up to par with companies such as Broadway.
"The play will be The Marvelous Marriage by playwright Al Funcoot with me playing the lead man," Count Olaf announced. "You, Violet and you, Klaus, and you, Sunny will play three cheering people at my wedding."
My siblings looked relieved that they will be just ensembles in the background. I turned to the count.
"And what will I do?" I asked curiously.
The count looked at me and smiled. "You, Edith, will play the woman I marry."
Oh...
Not able to process the information, I simply nodded.
"You will only have one line," he reassured. "And I think you know what it is."
"I do?" I asked, confused.
"Perfect darling."
Count Olaf dismissed Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to their room, leaving me alone with him in the dining room.
"Cupcake, Edith?" He asked, offering me the store bought treats.
"I'm alright but thank you," I said politely.
"I insist, dear," He shoves the cupcakes closer to my face.
I look him in the eye, not being able to read the emotions behind them. I quietly take a cupcake and begin to unwrap it. Before I know it, he swipes the cherry from atop the frosting and puts it in his mouth, a moan escaping his lips causing me to blush.
He sees and smirks at me. Awkwardly, I take a bite of the sweet cupcake.
"Good?" He asked after I finished.
I nod. "Yes, thank you."
Olaf brought his hand to my face, wiping next to my lip. He brought his thumb to his mouth, eating what looked to be the frosting from the cupcake.
He leaned in closer to me, putting the cupcakes down on the table. "Come with me, Edith," He said, standing up from the table and offering me his hand.
I slowly took it and he guided me through the messy house to the piano in the front room.
Olaf had me sit down on the small bench and he sat down beside me, the close proximity making my cheeks turn red.
"Play something for me," He whispers in my ear.
My hands find the keys and I begin to play a lullaby I would play to help Klaus sleep when he was a baby and for a brief time for Sunny.
I felt Olaf's hand tuck a lock of hair behind my ear. I finished the piece and he told me gently, "I didn't mean to give you this."
I felt his fingers brush the skin of the still tender bruise on my cheek. I unwillingly winced and he pulled away.
I took hold of his hand and placed his cold palm on the bruise, the coolness feeling good on the weakened skin.
I closed my eyes and let out a small sigh. When I opened them, I found only Olaf's eyes staring back into mine. His fingers found a few strands of my hair and caressed them lightly.
"You're such a lovely girl," He said. "I don't mind having to care for you as much as I mind having to provide for your siblings."
"But I've watched them grow up," I told him gently. "I love them."
"You're all intelligent children yet you're the only one who doesn't enjoy spouting about said intelligence," He grumbled. "Maybe one day you could learn to love me as well."
"What?" The small word sat between us.
He sighed and grabbed my chin gently, turning it to face him head on. His shiny eyes bore into mine as he leaned closer to press a kiss to the corner of my lips. My eyes widened and my cheeks flushed.
"Do you have feelings for me?" I asked, feeling dumb as soon as the words exited my mouth.
Of course he didn't. He was a grown adult and I was still legally and emotionally a child.
"Sorry, that was silly of me to ask," I stuttered, wanting to escape from his trapping gaze.
Count Olaf shook his head. "No, no, Edith, it was not a silly question," He assured me, reaching to grasp the nape of my neck under my golden locks. "And my answer to it isn't silly either."
His lips ended up pressed against mine and he groaned as he felt me kiss back. He pulled me close to his body as he hungrily kissed me. Having never been kissed this intensely before, I gasped when his tongue pressed into my mouth.
When we finally parted, I was out of breath and my lips swollen. His thumb brushed across my lower lip as he told me, "As soon as I saw you walk in here I wanted to make you mine."
"Count-" I began.
"Just Olaf, dear," He told me.
"Olaf," I said and his name rolled off my tongue in a way I couldn't help but blush at. "Is there a reason why I'm playing your bride in the play?"
"Well obviously," He replied, moving away from me and putting distance between us. "You are the oldest and a girl so it would make sense."
I didn't truly believe him but I didn't get to voice my opinion because the sound of footsteps outside the door caught Olaf's attention.
"My troupe is here for dinner again, although we have ordered take out," Olaf told me, the kindness lost from his tone. "You, orphan, are going to entertain us this evening."
My mouth dropped. What did he mean by 'entertain'? My head swam with different ideas, some more unpleasant than others.
As the Count rose from the piano to answer the door, I couldn't help but fear what he had in store.
Author's note: Hi readers. I told you it gets more interesting. As of now, the story may not match like it used to do because my source of the show isn't working at the moment. I do not have netflix and use an online website to watch the episodes which is currently not working as of now. So I will do my best but some details may not be exact but this is an AU so it doesn't have to be the exact same. Hope you enjoyed the chapter and there's more in store.
