Back in our bedroom, the day was growing old and the sun was sinking low. Klaus stared out the window while Violet and I occupied ourselves.
"Sunny must be so frightened," He said.
"We're all frightened, Klaus," I told him gently. "You should get some sleep."
"But Violet dismantled my bed," He sighed.
"Use Sunny's," said Violet, who was gathering supplies for her invention that she had yet to inform me about. "You stayed up all last night trying to find out Count Olaf's plot. It's my turn."
Klaus inhaled, frustrated, as he went to sit down next to me on the other bed. "I didn't help us," He said.
"Yes you did," I assured him. "You just didn't finish the job. Remember when our parents first brought Sunny home?"
"She bit the doorknob off the nursery," Klaus replied fondly.
"Mother and father..." I told him. "They made me promise to always look after the three of you and make sure you don't get into any trouble. Let me keep my promise."
As soon as Klaus was asleep and I had convinced Violet to include me with her plan, we both silently made our way down to the kitchen to gather the pieces needed for Violet's grappling hook idea.
As we assembled them, I kept remembering what happened with Olaf at the dining table. I had let him touch me, use me, and corrupt me despite all the horrible things he had done to me and my siblings.
I felt stupid and foolish (and I had been indeed) but most of all, I felt like a disgrace and ashamed. What would my parents have said if they had found out the daughter they trusted to protect their children from people like the Count had betrayed their trust and let him nearly defile her?
After turning the small dimly lit bathroom into our temporary inventing studio, Violet amazed me again having made a grappling hook that would be able to bring both of us to the top of the tower to free Sunny.
In the dark outside, I managed to get the hook part to catch something sturdy.
"Nice throw," said Violet quietly.
I smiled. "Nice invention."
Violet grabbed the device that would help us lift off the ground before saying to me, "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious."
With that, I heard the whirring of the machine and my sister and I began to rise towards Sunny's cage. A large smile broke out on my face in awe of what Violet managed to create.
"It is the source of all true art and science," Violet quoted.
We had reached the top of the tower when my smile quickly vanished.
Standing in the window with a hold on the fabric used for the grappling hook was the Hook-Handed Man or Hooky as I nicknamed him.
"How pleasant that you could join us."
This isn't good, was all I could think as he pulled me and Violet into the tower.
"What are you going to do with us?" Violet asked bravely.
"I said have a seat," Hooky replied.
"No you didn't," I told him.
He stared at us before yelling incoherently and Violet and I removed the grappling hook invention to sit down on a dirty seat.
