Chapter 4: Checkmate

Eren’s POV

“It’s very surprising that you actually was very obedient to do what Jean had asked you to do; jokingly.” The chess piece was knocked out with a slight tap.

I scoffed at his comment, “If I actually did know it was joke I would have beaten his ass up, Armin.”

“I actually didn’t know you’ll be taking it seriously.” Jean made a comment. I turned my head to look at him with a face he wouldn’t want to see ever again. “Okay, okay, I do apologize for it.” I just shook my head and focused back on the match between me and Armin.

"I still don’t get why I’m having a match with someone who as greatest skill with strategy.”

He let out a slight laugh, “Who knows you can win by luck?” I shrugged at his response and moved my next chess piece. It was his turn and he picked up his king piece, “If you were to be ruled under one person what would you do?”

I raised an eyebrow at him, “Why are you asking such a non-sense question?”

His eyes darted towards at me, “Oh it’s nothing really I was just wondering to be honest.” Those eyes went back on the game-board, as his brain started to work its way up on where to put his piece.

I would obey what king would say of course.” A clack appeared within the quiet environment.

What if the king wasn’t as loyal as you thought he would be?” Another clack reappeared making me wonder where these questions are going.

“What do you mean if he wasn’t loyal?”

One of my chess piece was knocked down, “You know what I mean. What if he was just obnoxious for power throwing people around as if they were his puppets?”  From there another of my chess piece was knocked down. “It’s your turn by the way.”

I snapped back into reality and looked back at the game board realizing I was doomed. “You did this on purpose didn’t you?”

“Not at all I thought you just despite the fact that I have more strategy skills more than you?”

I frowned at that thought of his. I took one of my chess pieces and moved it diagonally. “If he wasn’t loyal I wouldn’t dare to obey him. No king should treat his people as puppets because he should be able to protect them and treat them as humans.”

“Don’t you still have to obey him no matter what? Aren’t you afraid to face the consequences of not being obedient?” He threw another question at me.

I stopped my tracks and did my final move. My eyes looked up at him, “I wouldn’t be afraid no matter what the consequences are. I would throw him off the throne-“

“And would you go ahead and kill him?” I stopped to think about it as I looked down at the ground.

“Isn’t that too gruesome?”

“It is but wouldn’t he get the same sufferings as what he did to his people?” A loud clack had made me realize it was game over. “Check mate.” I looked at the game board and just let out a sigh.

“Were all these questions just to distract me from the game?”

“Nope not at all I just thought it would be fun to ask you those types of questions.” He let out a smile. I just frowned at his response, as he stood up from the couch. “Besides it has something to do with a person in this school.”
