The door to their house burst. Their tatay came marching in, drenched by the rain.

"Tay?", Butch asked. The young boy clutched his storybook to his chest. Y/N ran to look over the railing and saw the sight. Their father was frantic as he locked the door and windows of the house.

"Tay? What's going on?", she yelled from upstairs, a worried look on her face.

"Pack your things. We're leaving", Tatay replied urgently. Y/N came running down the stairs and asked more questions, her younger brother Butch only released a worried sob sound in question. Their father stopped pacing and grabbing things and looked them in the eye. Y/N's brows met even more when she saw how distraught her father was. His hair was a mess, his face was blotched with raindrops and tears, and his eyes were red and puffy from crying.

But tatay never cries, she thought.

"Tay-"

"Antonio's dead", Y/N gasped and cradled her little brother's head that was now nuzzled into her leg. Not Tiyo Tonio.

"What?", she replied.

"President Aguinaldo had him assassinated", Tatay Ernesto croaked out.

"For patriotism?", Y/N almost screeched. Her blood boiled with anger and recoiled with fear. Tatay didn't answer. He just wiped his eyes angrily. Antonio Luna And Ernesto deLos Reyes were the best of pare's. Antonio with his fierce hand at war and Ernesto, one of the open-eyed ilustrados. The two shared a bond from childhood, strengthened to adulthood due to their family ties and shared patriotism. If going against the president's decisions lead to the general's assassination, Ernesto's family will be doomed if they stayed in this godforsaken country.

"We need to leave", He repeated.

"Badoc?", Y/N asked. What other town would they go to?

"The country", Y/N heart sank to her stomach but she pulled herself together with one deep breath. "Pack only the essentials". Y/N nodded once and carried her brother upstairs.

"Are we gonna be okay, ate?", he whimpered into her shoulder. Y/N hushed the boy and gave them comforting words. "Tatay will protect us", she said before putting her down in their room.

"Come on, Koy", Y/N used her brother's nickname to try to comfort him more, "Help me pack".

For a good two hours, the family of three ran around the house trying to find everything they needed.

"Bring Pepay with you", Y/N said, handing the stuffed animal to his brother. She then folded and shoved everything she could into their last suitcase. It contained their Tatay's typewriter, some ink bottles, quills, charcoal pens, picture frames, and some heirlooms. Y/N put some other things of sentimental value like their favorite books, her mother's original sewing kit, and hers, her kuya's battered watch and hat.

She was now struggling to close the case when  Butch sat on it to help her latch the locks. She thanked him with a panicked kiss on his forehead.

They all finished packing. They were now standing in their sala, their suitcases stacked in a neat pile beside them. Ernesto had his arm around Y/N's shoulder while she carried Butch. Ernesto felt numb as he watched their now lifeless house . Y/N had silent tears running down her face while Butch was sobbing violently. Thunder boomed outside and the children squealed and hugged each other tighter while their father just stood there, trying to remain headstrong.

Soon a kalesa came trotting outside to take them to the pier. Ernesto passed money into trusted seafairers and kalesa driver's hands to smuggle them out of the country.
