~Flashback~
Tord's POV
Please make your way to the cafeteria for lunch. Its first come first serve so if you want to eat, you better start running.
Ah, yes. The glory days. Back when multiple people had to share bunkers and basically fight to survive. The Red Army didn't care about the health of low ranks. They were merely just pawns in a chess game of war.
I put my head back down on my pillow. It reeked of sweaty armpits, but I could care less. If I imagined I was back at Edd's house, I could tolerate it longer.
People rushed by, eager to get some form of nutrients in their scrawny and pathetic bodies.
Nathan would be back at any second now with something from his secret food stash that only I knew about. That gives the less fortunate people a chance at a meal, if I should even call it that. The food here consisted of mush and stale bread. Not surprising, coming from a place so similar to a prison, but even they probably served better food.
I stared up at the ceiling, studying the cracks and dried blood marks from previous violent occurrences.
There's even a few bullet holes strewn about, leaving punctured holes with the bullet still burrowed in. You could see them too, if you were standing at the right angle and the light bounced off of it.
"You still awake up there?" A voice called from down below.
"Yes, but I wish I was dead," I sat up. "That way I dont have to deal with any of this ghetto bullshit anymore."
"Hey! Don't talk about the ghettos like that. At least we get food." He mentioned
"And diseases," I added on.
Over the years, I've learned a lot about Nathan. He has a Jewish background and gets a bit salty when you poke fun at it.
"Aren't you just a ray of sunshine," he teased.
"If you start singing I'm gonna steal your rations," I playfully threatened.
Just as I've learned a lot about him, he's learned a lot about me. He found out that I despised the sunshine lollipops song long ago, when I glared at a guard who was whistling it while walking the perimeter.
He doesn't know the story behind it. I never told anybody about it. He just knows that I hated the song and got mad whenever I heard it.
I climbed down and plopped down next to him on the lower bunk. He opened his bag and pulled out two bags of chips and a small, cheap bottle of whiskey. The label had been torn off, but I could smell it a mile away.
I grabbed the bottle and opened it, taking a hearty swig. It burned my throat, but I didn't care. The searing sensation of alcohol felt heavenly as I felt it slide down my esophagus.
He handed me the bag of chips. The label read, ORIGINAL SUNBAKED. I opened it and took a chip out, studied it and popped it in my mouth. It was a bit stale, but it was real food for once.
"So," I looked at Nathan. "Any new rumours on the device?"
He shrugged before opening his chips as well. "Not that I know of. I was thinking, however, that maybe the head scientist didn't part with it in the first place."
"What are you implying?" I didn't like where this was going one bit.
"I'm implying that we search his body! That's the one place nobody would think to look!" He looked at me with an eager grin.
"How would we even get in? You and I both know that we're too big to crawl through vents."
"Well I happen to know a guy who can get us in there."
