Weaponized

My footsteps echoed off the brick walls as I made my way to the next place stationed with guards.

The hallway was surprisingly empty, considering that this was an army base, and people were usually bustling around at all hours of the day.

Eventually, I heard two voices further off into the distance along with the squawk of a radio.

No doubt, those are guards.

The voices got closer as I rounded the corner, silently preparing to surrender.

I finally gathered up enough courage to step out in front of them, my hands up.

The first guard paused mid-sentence as he laid eyes on me. Realization kicked in and, without any hesitation, trained his gun on me, the other guard doing the same.

"How the hell did you get out here without being spotted?" The first guard asked, walking towards me with the gun still trained.

"I was here when the announcement came over," I told him. "I've decided to surrender."

The first guard reached me and signaled the other guard to lower his gun. "You're a damn fool," he said to me.

"What have I got to lose, a nice luxurious life in boot camp?"

A huff of laughter escaped him as he started pulling me along. "Charles, bring up the back, would ya?"

The other guard nodded and hurried over behind me.

The first guard raised his radio and spoke into it. "Boss, call the search off. We've gottem."

A few seconds passed as we walked before the radio squawked to life.

"Good. Bring him into my office."

"Yes, sir."

After a few more seconds of silence passed, he shook his head in defeat. "I have to know."

I gave him a confused look. "Know what?"

"Why did you surrender yourself? By the way you tore into that kid, we all assumed that you'd put up one hell of a fight."

"Change of heart, I guess?" I lied; hopefully, they would buy it.

"I don't believe you, but I'm not gonna interrogate you on it. In my opinion, that kid was a nuissance. I'm glad that karma finally bit him in the ass."

"I can feel the same thing happening to me any second now." I cringed, imagining what hell I've gotten myself into.

We were in front of the door to the red leader's office now. I could feel the icy waves of adrenaline and fear course through my veins as I took a step forward.

"Well, whatever happens, I wish you the best of luck. After all, you did make our jobs easier." The guard patted me on the back before opening the door and pushing me in.

It felt like I traveled into a different dimension as I was pushed into the office. It looked nothing like the rest of the building. It was clean and nicely decorated. The floor was padded down in a shaggy blue carpet that was so clean that it looked as if it was just installed the day before. A desk sat in the middle of the room with a black office chair behind it, its back facing me.

I noticed the wooden chair on my side of the desk and took a seat out of respect.

"Why hello, Tord. It's been a while, hasn't it?" The chair slowly turned around to reveal a man, about a couple inches shorter and a few years older than me, brown hair like Tom's, small piercing eyes, and a blue suit with hints of red here and there.
