Yami was very aware of everyone watching them. The fact that he got to take out one of the smaller boats by himself now had made the rounds pretty quickly, but that he was planning to take Y/N along had spread even quicker. He didn't really know what to make of it, so he decided to just ignore everyone's curious looks. He just hoped that it wouldn't deter Y/N from doing this with him.
He had been quite worried when she had been talking about how nervous she was and that she was thinking of flaking on him. He had been so worried that he had gotten up extra early and was waiting for her for ages. He honestly thought that she might not show up, but then just on time, there she was. She looked pretty nervous and she looked like she hadn't really slept much, but Yami was glad that she had shown up at all. And once he saw her making her way down the beach, he was confident they could do this thing. She would do just fine today.
And now here they were, getting the boat ready to get out on sea once the tide was coming in. Y/N was busy checking the nets one last time, before they'd get going, while Yami was making sure the sails and all the ropes were in order. It was the same stuff that he had to do any other day when he was working on the bigger ship with his father. He had been going through all the motions about a million times before, but today he had to do it all by himself (well, and with Y/N).
He was starting to feel pretty nervous himself. Sure, he had done all of this before, but now everyone was kind of seeing whether he could do all this by himself. Whether he was ready to take responsibility like that. He had been asking his father to get a boat for himself for ages now. He was suddenly realizing just why Y/N had been so nervous. Now that this one thing that he had been wanting for so long was here, he wasn't really sure anymore if it was the right choice. Or rather, he was afraid that it wasn't going to be what he had hoped it would be.
Especially now with everyone watching he felt like he couldn't focus on anything he was doing. He could hear them whispering and chuckling as they passed by their boat and Yami was pretty sure they were just chatting as usual, but every little noise felt like it was directed at him. It felt pretty terrifying, if he was honest. But what was he supposed to do about it? He was here now.
All he could do was try to focus on what he was doing, trying not to screw up and hoping that Y/N would notice if he made any mistakes. Which was unlikely, since she wasn't nearly as familiar with ships and boats as he was. She hadn't been growing up by the sea like he had and she surely hadn't been growing up in a family that was full of fishermen. She had told him herself that she had taught herself whatever she knew about fishing and rowing a boat.
Well, she might still get lucky with a bit of common sense and figure out if there was something wrong at any point. Either way, Yami was surprised to see how calm she looked this morning. It seemed like she wasn't nervous at all anymore. She was working quickly and efficiently and he was almost convinced that she had more of an idea of what she was doing than he did. He was starting to feel really glad that he had suggested taking her along to his father. He'd hate having anyone else with him on this first trip on his own, trying to work well under pressure.
"You good, Yami?" Y/N wanted to know. She looked like she was done with the nets and was just waiting for him to finish up his part.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why?" he replied. He didn't look weird, did he? He didn't remember this story, but apparently the first time his father took him out fishing, he got violently seasick and the way everyone described it to him he must have been looking green and pale and close to death.
"You've been staring into the void for a good while." she told him with a sympathetic smile. Yami blushed a little. She had actually caught him staring at her? And what was even worse, she had probably figured out that it was because of him being nervous about this. After he had been slagging her for it yesterday evening during their walk. God, how Yami wished that he was on one of his walks with her now.
