Zachary

I woke up, alone, back in that awful room. The sound of glasses shattering woke me up. His voice booming through the house. He's home.

I got out of the small bed and made my way to the stairs to eavesdrop. I've gotten good at being silent while walking.

"God maybe if you actually got a job, we wouldn't have to live here! I could have the things I need!" He screamed at her, slamming a glass down causing it to shatter.

"I need a job? You're completely useless! What do you do? Go out to clubs and bars all day then come home and expect more booze?" She screamed back.

"Maybe if my wife cared for me I wouldn't need to leave all day! Maybe we could be happy!" He said, breaking more things.

"Maybe if my husband was loyal and a decent human being than we could have a good life for our family! For our son! Instead you choose your selfish little self!" She slammed down something that I can only assume was our family photo by how hard the impact was.

"You're one to talk about loyalty! I'm the bad human? Look at yourself! And don't you dare bring your son into this!"

"Our son, Lukas! Our son! But you barely even know his name! So your right. He is my son. And my son and I are leaving your sorry ass!" She said, walking towards the stairs.

Then I heard it. The loudest thump I'd ever heard in this house. The front door closes— well slams— and I run down the stairs to see what happened.

Glass was everywhere, blood laying on some of it. I looked around to see her. My mother, lying on the ground, near unconsciousness. "Zach." She said looking at me. My eyes filling with tears.

"Zach" she said again. She kept on saying it over and over again. "Zach please wake up." She said.

Wake up? What is she talking about-

"Zach!" Sophia screamed, causing me to jump out of the nightmare. It was a dream?

I looked over at Sophia to see her in one of my t-shirts that was far too big for her and a pair of my boxer shorts.

My breathing that had been severely uneven was soon slowed after I saw her. I wrapped my arms around her waist, shoving my head in her chest.

"Hey. It's ok. It was just a dream. You're safe." She said, rubbing my hair comforting me. She kissed the top of my head as I sobbed into her chest to the point where her shirt was now wet. "Shhh it's ok love. It's ok you're safe. I promise." She said, still comforting me.

It took me over an hour to get myself together and she was there the whole time. Holding onto me as if I was a child in distress.

I kind of am like a child in distress.

"You ok honey?" She asked kissing my head. She didn't ask it in a condescending way and she made that clear. She cared. She truly cared.

"Yea I'm better." I said into her chest. She kissed my head making me look up at her. She kissed me as I kissed her back. She deepened the kiss as she ran her fingers through my hair.
