Haddonfield, the place where he calls home, Michael Myers. I've heard the stories at work. Michael Myers, The Boogeyman. The man who terrorised a small community for forty years. He's the reason some people can't move on.
It's all I hear about, sometimes I just want to ask someone about they're weekend, but no, Michael Myers takes over the conversation. I'm twenty-eight years old, I don't believe in the Boogeyman and I most certainly don't care for some old guy who likes to run around wearing a Halloween mask scaring people.
Apparently the story goes like this, for those who haven't heard it enough. Michael Myers attacked and killed his sister when he was seven years old. He returned fourteen years later and killed again.
Then, forty years later, he came home to kill once more. You getting all this!?. People we're brutally slayed by this man. A mob, a lynch mob, apparently they cornered him, beat him up and shot him but he still got up and murdered all of them. Can you see why I'm a little sceptical!?, they shot this man and he got up and murdered over twenty people.
Now, normally I'd laugh it off, but people around here get so scared at Halloween night. They barricade their doors, arm themselves with weapons, I've seen some crazy stuff in my time, but this, this takes the cake. Apparently it revolves around this one woman, Laurie Strode. I've seen her, she'll come in every once in a while to get supplies, but here is the thing, she hardly speaks. She has her granddaughter Allyson with her everywhere she goes.
Laurie's daughter Karen, who would be Allyson's mother was killed four years ago on Halloween night by the supposedly evil Michael Myers. Now don't get me wrong, but surely Michael would be in his seventies by now, I'd take my chances with that guy. I'm sorry, I haven't even introduced myself, I'm Y/N Doyle. I've lived in Haddonfield for the last three years.
I came out here to pursue a writing career. I was stopping in this little town as a pit stop, just somewhere to hold up for a while. Little town feels gave me the chance to write in peace, until I hear of Michael Myers. Thing is, I like it here. The people are nice, foods great and I might have a slight crush on a girl. We talk, she's cool, but she's reserved. I can't tell if she likes me yet, we swap glances, she'll tell me I look good today and then sometimes not say a word.
I don't normally get like this over a girl, but something about her just makes me feel happy. I just get a overwhelming feeling when I see her. You know the kind, your heart beats just that little bit faster, your mouth will dry up, her eyes, wow, her eyes. It like starring into a angels eyes, they are captivating. I sometimes fee like a hostage to her, she can't do no wrong, or even seem rude on her days where she acts like I'm just apart of the walls.
Am I reading to much into this?, or does she like me. Should I ask her out?, or is that to forward?. I've seen some guys make the attempt to hit on her or flirt for use of a better word. She looks at them like if they another word she'll judo throw them. But with me it's different, she'll talk, laugh, she'll even brush the small strand of brown hair behind her ear so I can stare deeper into her eyes. So yeah, that's why I stay in Haddonfield, that's my one and only reason.
Oh wait, shit, she just walked in. Ok, let's play this cool.
"Hey Allyson" I say as I nod at her. Yeah, that was cool.
"Oh, hey Y/N, I didn't know you were working today". Oh, wow she responded, it must be a good day. Ok, I'm going to continue to play it cool.
"I like your socks" That's it, I blew it.
"Um, thanks I guess."
"Just these today?" I ask as she stares at me uncomfortably.
"Yeah, I suppose it's just those."
I scan the items and bag them up like a good guy should. She nods at me as she leaves the store. I bang my head off of the counter, I like your socks? Really, is that the best I could come up with? I'm now officially going bounce my head some more so I can try and forget about this awkward moment. The manager comes out from the back room, he watches me head down into my forearm. He laughs and trotters back inside.
"Yeah, funny right" I say smartly.
Finally, six o'clock, home time. Today has felt like a never ending torment, it's hard to explain really. Typical customer, some don't like the colour of the fruit, can you reach up there, you're a strong boy, firstly I'm a man and I swear to god, someone grabbed my cheeks earlier and not the one's on my face. I'm just happy the day is done honestly. I double check everything before I lock up, Sal has a rule, his most important, double check everything before we lock the front door.
Checked, double checked, heck I even triple checked everything for him. He's a good guy, he gave me a job when I didn't have anything. I owe him more then some work to return the favour. As I'm locking the front door to the store I can see some guys, early twenties maybe. They are whistling at some girl, I look on as I try to lock the door, it's so damn hard to turn this key I swear. This lock needs some WD40. I finally hear the click, double check it's locked and when I turn I see Allyson rushing away from the group of guys. They follow swiftly behind her, one reaches out grabbing her arm, pulling her backwards. I rush over, pushing the guy away from her. He stares at me. I know he wants to swing on me, but will he is the question?.
"Leave her alone" I say puffing out my chest.
"And if we don't?" He asks.
"Well then I will proceed to beat the ever living crap out of you Curtis." I say once again with my chest puffed out. Wait, I wonder if Allyson is watching?, maybe I should puff my chest a little more.
Curtis and his gang of goons take off. I guess one witness was enough to scare him. Curtis is the local drop-out, never done anything in life and failed at school. So now he runs around town trying to scare innocent people. We've had our run ins when I first got here, let's just say it only took one.
I look at Allyson, she looks a little shaken, of course she'd be after what she went through. Some guy grabbing you in the dark would bring back some memories.
"Can I walk you home?" I ask.
She nods, I take her bag and walk to her pace. Ten minutes later we're here. I drop her bag from my shoulder and give it to her. She didn't say a word the whole walk, I wonder if she felt uncomfortable being alone with me. I guess only time will tell. She places another strand of hair behind her ear, she can't look at me. Did I do something wrong?, was I supposed to make conversation?. Maybe I missed a crucial opportunity here, but I'm not getting any signs she likes me.
"Thank you" she says softly.
"No problem, happy to help."
She turns and walks away up the front steps of her porch. She glances back over her shoulder then fully turns. But she isn't looking at me, she's looking behind me, she's looking past me. What is she looking at or better yet, looking for I wonder. Now that I think about it, every crackle, every branch broke, for every whistle in the wind she'd twitch or jump and she'd always move just that little bit closer. She is scared of something, and I just continued walking.
I get it now, she is still traumatised. Hopefully if she gives me the chance I can break down those barriers. I look at the sign 45 Lampkin Lane. Holy shit, she lives in the Myers house. But why?. I look up and she is still starring out at the darkness, to the sea of nothingness. She looks at me one more time and goes inside. I can hear the multiple locks on the door and I see her peer through the side glass to see I'm still there. That's my cue to take off I guess. Here's to me walking the rest of the way home.
