A V E R L Y

"Let's go," He says once the sky starts turning a dark blue.

We pick up the supplies and put them in our bags, hold our canvases and head to the parking lot.

"Thank you," I tell him, honestly.

"For?" He asks, looking straight.

"Everything.. from making me say no to painting with me.. thank you," I say, we stop next to his car.

He smiles, but before he can say anything, we're interrupted by one of my project partners.

Oh no.

"Averly, you're still here, so could you help me with that assignment that's due this week?" He says and I can feel Dylan tense up.

"Umm," I think about what to say and I start biting my lip but then I feel that comforting hand on my back again, this time he's holding my waist.

I look back at the guy and sigh, " I- I can't," I tell him, "I'm busy," I say, looking at the ground.

His eyes widen slightly but he nods and walks away.

I have this urge to call him, to say that I can help, but I just close my fist and watch him go.

"Hey," Dylan says while putting a finger under my chin so I can look at him.

Our faces close, his one hand still holding me.

"You come before anyone else," He says and I nod swallowing a lump that formed.

"I said no," I whisper, "Again," I tell him and he smiles.

"You did babe," He says and my heart flutters as my eyes light up at what he called me.
