Recap
I’m nervous as I walk down the hospital hallway. I don’t know what to expect. I don’t even know what happened to her. When I push open her room door, my heart skips a beat. I see Jamie on the bed, her eyes closed, and IV hooked on to her arm. Jay is sitting on a chair next to her, and when he sees me walk in, he stands up quickly. His eyes are red, like if he’d been crying. Neither of us says anything. We just stand there looking at each other on either side of Jamie’s bed. I break the silence “What happened?”
Emma
There were so many things I wanted to tell Jay, but standing there in front of him, with Jamie between us, laying on her hospital bed, I couldn’t think of one thing to say. When I ask him what happened, his shoulders drop as he looks down at Jamie. “I don’t know all the details. All I know is that a guy tried to rape her and Max intervened. She seemed fine when she brought Max out of the VIP lounge, but then she suddenly collapsed and was breathing oddly. They’re going to do some tests on her in a bit to make sure everything is okay.” He looks up at me again and his eyes meet mine, our gazes locking from across the room. The look in his eyes is so intense, I can’t look away. It feels like his gaze is burning through me when suddenly, he says, “Emma, can we please talk?” This is it; the moment I’ve been waiting for for weeks now. I never imagined we’d be standing in a hospital room with Jamie hooked on to an IV, but then again, I didn’t think things would turn out the way they did either. Looking into his deep blue eyes, I don’t trust myself to speak first so I just nod and say, “Sure.”
Just as Jay is about to say something, we hear someone yelling in the hallway. I turn towards the doorway and see Scarlet standing there, looking very pissed off, and an embarrassed Lena standing behind her, trying to calm her down but failing. Scarlet steps into the room “Emma, what the hell is going on?” I don’t answer her but when she sees Jamie asleep on the bed, her face fills with worry. She stares at Jamie for a few seconds before turning to me. “What happened to her?” I shake my head, “I don’t know much. We’re just waiting for the doctors to do some tests, then we’ll find out what’s going on. Hopefully she’ll wake up soon. Jay has been with her this whole time.” Scarlet turns around and notices Jay standing by Jamie’s bed. At first, she looks angry again but then she just looks confused. She turns from Jay to me, and back to Jay. I’m not sure what to expect from her at this point but what she does next definitely surprises me. Scarlet walks around Jamie’s bed, and walks right up to Jay. Standing in front of him, she looks even shorter than usual, his height towering over her. Scarlet looks up at Jay and with a small smile on her face says, “I am supposed to be hating you and I know deep down inside, I might like you but right now, I’d just like to thank you for what you’ve done for Jamie.” With that, she throws her arms around his waist and gives him a tight hug. Jay seems confused and looks at me, but I just shrug my shoulders because I am just as confused as he is. He hugs Scarlet back. She steps away from him, holding her head up high and says, “You give nice hugs. Okay, I’m back to hating you now. Good bye.”
Jay smiles as Scarlet walks back to stand next to Lena and I. A nurse comes in and tells us that they have to prepare Jamie for the medical tests, so we all have to leave the room and wait in the waiting area until further notice. As we’re walking down the hallway, Jay grabs my hand and stops me. “Emma, do you want to go coffee under talk? Err, I mean, talk over coffee? I could really use some right now.” I smile at Jay’s awkwardness and nod, turning to walk in the direction of the cafeteria. Out of the corner of my eye, I see that Lena and Scarlet are watching us; Lena with a smile on her face, Scarlet with her eyebrows raised and her lips pursed.
Scarlet
There aren’t many people in the waiting area when Lena and I get there, only the three guys that we came with, Siva, Tom and Nathan. Apparently they’re Jay’s boy band buddies or whatever. We all sit around, bored out of our minds, just waiting. The guys are trying to make small talk with us and although Lena seems to be enjoying herself, I can’t help feeling very awkward. I can’t sit still. My leg keeps shaking. Lena looks at me and then down at my leg, telling me to stop fidgeting. I calm down for a few minutes but start tapping my fingers against the arms of the plastic chair. I can’t take it anymore and I stand up suddenly. Everyone looks at me, confused. “I, uhhh, I’m going to find um, do you want some err, are you guys hungry? I’m gonna get a burger. Lena, you want a burger? Okay, I’ll be right back.” I am about to walk away when I hear someone say, “Wait, I’ll come with you.” Damnit, I didn’t want anyone to come with me. When I turn around and see who decided to come with me, I want to bang my head against the vending machine. It was Tom, the guy I liked least out of all these British pretty boys. Not only was he the guy who had bumped into me at the party and spilled a drink on me, there was also just something about him that really annoyed me. I couldn’t figure out what it is though, and that drove me crazy. I try to be as polite as possible, “No, it’s okay. I’ll be fine on my own.” Tom puts his hand on my shoulder and smiles in that goofy way of his, “Nonsense. You can’t get burgers for everyone by yourself. Besides, what kind of man would I be if I let a girl like you go out there on your own at this time?” And just like that, he starts walking towards the door. I figure there’s no point in arguing with him anymore, so I follow him out the door and pray that I don’t end up pushing him in front of a bus.
Lena
Siva, Nathan and I stay in the waiting area as Scarlet and Tom go to get food. I actually fear for Tom’s life right now. This has not been one of Scarlet’s best days, so she’s quite dangerous at the moment. After sitting in silence for a while, Siva stands up and says he’s going to go check up on Max. Since they only allow one person at a time in a room in the hospital area that he is in, Nathan and I stay behind. Maybe it’s because we were the only two people in the room but Nathan and I start talking and I forget where I am and why I’m here. He talks about his sister, Jess and about his mom’s cuppa (which is tea, apparently). I’m laughing as he tells me about something embarrassing that happened while they were in Brazil when suddenly he stops talking. I look at him, confused and he says, “Lena, you have a very beautiful laugh.”
Jay
Emma and I sit at a small table in the cafeteria, a cup of coffee in front of each of us. I had imagined this moment many times. I rehearsed what I was going to say to her and I thought I was ready to face her, but now, sitting in front of her, I feel nervous. What if she doesn’t care what I have to say anymore? What if she’s moved on already, while I’m still hung up on her, hoping to fix what shouldn’t have been broken? Looking at Emma, I can tell she’s expecting me to speak first. She doesn’t look upset. She actually looks pretty calm, considering the whole situation and everything that has happened. I take a deep breath and just say the first thing that comes to mind, “Emma. I am so sorry. For everything. I was such a jerk to you. I shouldn’t have reacted that way, and I shouldn’t have gotten so mad at you. You didn’t deserve that. Can you- uhh, is there any way you could possibly forgive me?” Emma’s eyes don’t leave mine as I speak but I can’t tell what she’s thinking. She looks away from me. She doesn’t say anything for a long time. She just sits there, looking down at her coffee. The silence is killing me and I can hear my own heartbeat, each passing second making me more and more nervous as I wait for Emma to say something.
