Jay/Luke

Luke? I don’t know what made me say my name is Luke. Maybe its because every girl that’s been interested in me lately only liked me because of who I am, the member of a boyband. This girl obviously doesn’t know, so why ruin that? Sure, technically I’m lying to her about my identity but I’m going to tell her who I am eventually. I just want to have a normal conversation with a normal girl. Emma seems normal enough to me and she’s gorgeous. Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself here. She was sitting here alone, so maybe she’s waiting for someone. Could be her boyfriend. A beautiful girl like her has to have a boyfriend. Before I can ask if she’s waiting for someone, a girl comes running up to the booth where we’re sitting, looking like she was just running a few kilometers. It takes her a good minute to catch her breathe before she says anything and I notice that Emma looks like she just saw a ghost, looking back from me to the girl. Between frantic breaths, the girl manages to say “Oh my god Emma, you will never guess who’s in New York right now!” Emma ignores her comment and quickly gets up from her seat. That’s when the girl sees me sitting there. She looks very confused and before she can say anything else, Emma tells me not to go anywhere, that she’ll be right back. Not that I was planning on leaving anyway. Before the girl could say anything, Emma pulls her away to the ladies room. Well. That was odd. I wonder why Emma didn’t introduce me to her. What was the girl talking about? Who is in New York? And why did Emma look so terrified? Anyway, whatever the reason, I had to stay. I had to talk to her. After what seems like a lifetime, I see Emma walking back towards the booth, with the girl right behind her. Emma sits down in front of me, makes room so the girl could sit next to her and with a smile says, “Sorry Luke, that was so rude of me. This is my friend, Jamie.” God, her smile. I’m not too sure what she just said. I hadn’t noticed earlier how great her smile is, but now that I have, I can’t seem to look away. I need to focus before she thinks I’ve gone mad. With that in mind, I turn towards the girl. What was her name again? Oh yeah, Jamie.  I smile at her and say “Hello Jamie.  Nice to meet you. Seems like I’m in luck tonight, meeting two beautiful women.” Jamie looks stunned and after a few seconds, manages to let out a laugh that somehow doesn’t seem genuine. At that moment, the waitress comes by and asks if anyone wanted to order. Emma orders a beer and a guacamole appetizer for us all to share. I order a beer for myself. Jamie says that she can’t stay and she grabs her purse saying “I wish I could stay but I just remembered I have this term paper due tomorrow. I’ll call you tomorrow, Emma.” With that, she gets up, looks at me, smiles quickly and walks away. Well that was fast.

Emma and I are alone now. That’s when I remember that Emma was alone before and might have been waiting for someone. “I hope you don’t mind me sitting here with you. Were you waiting for someone earlier?” I ask. Emma smiles, shakes her head and says “Not at all. I was actually waiting for Jamie, but I didn’t think she was going to show up. She usually doesn’t. And as you can see, when she does show up, she doesn’t stay very long. I’m used to sitting here alone, so it’s nice to have some company.” What a relief! Our order comes and we stay talking for a while. Emma is really easy to talk to and even though we don’t talk about anything too personal, I feel like I could possibly talk to her all day. Not talking about what I do for once was also nice. An hour and 2 beers later, Emma says “It’s kind of late. I should get going now. It was nice meeting you, Luke.” For some reason, I panic. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want her to go but I obviously can’t say that, and it really was late. The guys are probably wondering where I am, anyway. Before I can stop myself, I blurt out “So, can I see again soon? Maybe hang out sometime?” Emma hesitates for a while and says “Sure, that’d be nice.” I manage to ask her for her number, which she writes down on a bar napkin. Looking down at the napkin, I say “Well, I’ll call you soon then.” Emma smiles coyly, says “I hope so” and gives me a quick kiss on the cheek. And then she just turns around and walks away. Wow. American women really are something special.
