Jay/Luke

After Emma left the bar, I decided to have another beer before walking back to the hotel. I don’t know how the lads are going to feel about me going off on my own and meeting a girl on our first night back in New York. When I get to our suite, I find all 4 of them watching a football game. Siva notices me first and says “Hey mate, where did you run off to?” “Just went out for a drink, trying to find the best bar in the area” I say. This gets Tom’s attention “Any luck with that?” I need to tell them about Emma somehow. “Yeah I found one. And I met a girl there.” Max looks up from the game and says “Did you now? What’s she like?” What’s Emma like? “Her name is Emma. She’s majoring in fine arts at NYU. She’s smart and beautiful. She has these dark mesmerizing eyes that sparkle when she smiles.” Before I can continue talking about her, Nathan smiles and says “Way to go mate! It’s been a while since you meet a decent girl.” I’m not sure how they’re going to react to this but I say, “Yeah, she seems great. Except there’s one problem.” At that, all 4 lads look my way with questioning looks.  “She doesn’t know who I really am. I told her my name is Luke.” Siva gives me a concerned look and says “Why? I thought you said she’s a nice girl. Why would you lie to her?” I had a feeling this question would come up so I say, “Honestly, I’m tired of girls who just want to be with me because of who I am. Emma doesn’t know and I want to get to know a girl without my career being in the way.” Max laughs and says “Well I think it’s brilliant and you should go for it. What’s the worse that can happen?” Tom agrees with Max. Nathan just says “Well, we’re going to be in New York more now, so do what you want” and goes back to watching the game. Max and Tom join him, but Siva isn’t convinced. He follows me to the room and says, “Jay, do you have a plan?” “What do you mean?” I ask. “I mean, what are you going to do when she finds out the truth? Don’t you think she’s going to be upset when she finds out you lied to her?” Siva, ever the gentleman, has a point and I know he’s right. Sighing, I ask him “So what do you think I should do?” “Tell her the truth. Call her now and just tell her.” I think about it for a while before pulling out the bar napkin with her number on it from my pocket. Siva pats me on the back and says “Do it, mate. You won’t regret it. Trust me.” With that, he walks out of the room, leaving me alone to call Emma.

I dial her number and as the phone rings, I feel nervous. I don’t want to do this, but Siva is right. If I don’t tell her now, it could be worse for everyone when she finds out the truth. The phone continues ringing, and just as it’s about to go to voicemail, she answers it. Hearing her voice, I forget my main reason for calling. I blurt out “Hello Emma. It’s J- Luke, from the bar?” She sounds surprised when she says “Oh hey Luke! I didn’t think you were going to call me.” Why would she think I wouldn’t call her? “Well this is me, calling you.” God, could I make this any more awkward? I need to say something before she thinks I’m a fool. “Are you doing anything tomorrow night? I’d like to see you again.” She doesn’t answer right away. She’s going to blow me off. I can feel it. “That’d be nice” That’s all she says, but it’s all I need to hear. We agree on a time and place and after I close the phone, I walk back into the room where the lads are. Siva looks up and asks, “What did she say?” That’s when I realized I didn’t tell her the truth, like I was supposed to. “I didn’t tell her. But we’re going out tomorrow, so I’ll tell her then.” Even as I say that though, I know I’m not really going to tell her. I can’t.
