Chapter 5

Amelia's POV

After Maggie left, I laid down for a few minutes trying to calm down. After a few minutes I decided to go wash my face and set up my computer for the call with Kai.

When I walked into the bathroom Jo was there, she was links best friend and the one he'd been staying with since he proposed.

"Are you ok?" Jo asked, concerned. Clearly link hadn't talked to her yet.

"Yeah I'm fine" I replied not wanting to talk about it.

"Ok, well I'm here if you want to talk." She said. She was always so sweet.

"Thank you" I said as she left the bathroom. I washed my face with cold water so the puffiness would go down, it helped but you could still kinda tell, but I needed to go set up the computer.

Kai's POV

I had been working with the mice from the trial. The MRI showed that 74% of the transplanted cells are functional, which is good, but I see it as a need for 26% improvement. I logged onto the conference call before Amelia did, which made sense because I was a few minutes early.

"Hi Dr. Bartley!" I heard her voice, it was so cute, but she sounded sad. I then saw her face pop on my computer. Something was wrong, I kind of wanted to ask but I didn't want to pry.

"Hello Dr. Shepard," I said smiling, trying not to look concerned. "How are you?" I asked politely.

"A little stressed, but I'll be ok" She said

"Close your eyes" I said

"Um... okay" she said, closing her eyes hesitantly.

"You're on the top of Mt. Monadnock, in New Hampshire, it's so clear you can see the Boston skyline. It's summer, but there's a cool breeze, so it's not too warm." I said, seeing her breathe slow, which was exactly what I wanted. I blushed a little from her smile so I was glad her eyes were closed.

She slowly opened her eyes, blushing just the tiniest bit. I smiled back, we shared looks as if to say "thank you" and "you're welcome" without saying anything.

"Umm, how did the MRIs look? She asked coming back into reality.

"They show that 74% of the transplanted cells are functional" I replied.

"That's fantastic!" She said enthusiastically.

"Eh I see it as a need for 26% improvement" I replied less enthusiastically. She giggled at my need for perfection. "I want to start a new group next week, are you going to be up here?" I asked, more asking just to find out if she'd be here than for work.

"Umm y-yeah I'd be thrilled" she said

"Alright, see you next week Shepard" I said

"Yep, see you then" she said, logging off the zoom call.
