Amelia And Kai

Chapter 6

Kai's POV
I was working late in the lab, just boring paperwork, which Amelia had emailed me earlier saying she would help me with it tonight, but it's almost 10:00 and she hasn't shown up. I'm starting to worry, which is making it quite difficult to focus on work.

I continued to work, I was starting to get really worried, but also quite tired. I haven't been sleeping much lately, I Don't need much sleep to function but I need some. I just kept staying up thinking about Amelia, she was definitely giving me flirty vibes when she was here, but it may just be her personality.

I looked at the clock, 10:45. Ok now I was starting to really worry. As I started to get up to walk over to my computer the door opened.

Amelia POV
"Thank you for flying American Airlines! We hope you had a good experience!" The flight attendant said to me as I walked off the plane in Minnesota. I smiled at her to be polite, but I was tired as I had just woken up from my nap.

As I walk out of the airport into the cold, night Minnesota air, I woke up a little more. It was 10:30, I had booked a later flight so I could do a surgery in the morning, but then it was delayed so I was even more tired than I expected to be. I just called an Uber to take me to the hospital. I didn't need to rent a car, as the hospital and hotel are within walking distance of each other, and I don't really go anywhere else.

I told Kai I would stop by the lab and do some paperwork so they wouldn't be left to do it all, but honestly I don't think they'll still be there, I am hoping they are.

I paid for the Uber, climbed out of the car and walked into the hospital. I hadn't been here enough to know my way around easily, but I had an idea. I turned left down a hallway and saw the door that said 'the grey center'. I saw Kai with a concerned look on their face.

"I hope you aren't worrying about me" I say as I walk through the glass door of the lab.

Kai smiled, I can tell they're relieved. "Of course not Dr. Shepard" they say, clearly lying. "But I'm glad you made it here safely"

"How's the paperwork going?" I ask, changing the subject. "I would have been here sooner but my fligh-"

"Don't worry about it." They cut me off. "Boring as usual, most of it is done anyways"

"I still feel bad, why are you here this late anyways?" I question, concerned for their sleep schedule.

"I need very little sleep to function" they reply flirting... I think? I don't know.

"Well I am tired, so I may be no help for work right now, but umm I'm hungry, do you know of any good restaurants open this late?" I ask.

"Are you asking me out Shepard?" They ask with a grin.

"Nooo, no. No, i was just, i mean-" I say panicking

"I'm kidding Shepard, relax," they respond, laughing a little. God, their laugh is so cute. "There's a good diner down the road that's open far later than it probably should be."

"Sounds perfect!" I say.

"Great, let me just pack up my things then we can go" they say, starting to pack up.

"Ok!" I say, realizing what was about to happen. "I'll be right back"

I walked out of the lab and found my way to the bathroom, looking at myself for the first time since I got off the plane. Oh god. I fix my hair a little, but after realizing there's not much I can do I land on just leaving it. Why am I so nervous? It's just Kai, we're just friends, this isn't anything to be nervous about.

I walk out of the bathroom, heading back to the lab. I see Kai waiting just outside the lab. They smile as I approach them, and we head down to their car.
