Billypaw sat next to Whitepaw, the white and orange apprentaice was grooming her fur. Billypaw slitted her eyes agenced the The sun's rays that scraped against the earth, a shiver through the land.
"Do you think Wolfclaw will teach us something today?" Billypaw asked.
"I don't know, he is an unpredictable mentor," White'paw mewed, "We'll just have to wait and see."
"Sure," Billypaw mewed back.
She glanced over at White'paw, "How are you feeling after our battle training earlier?" she asked.
"Oh, I'm fine," She paused to brush out a patch of fur, "That was a good move you tried."
She smiled warmly at billypaw.
"Thanks. I was worried I might hurt you." Billypaw said quietly.
The white apprentice shrugged, "I'm fine, really."
"That's good."
Billy'paw's ears pricked, and she turned her head to the end of the clearing. The deputy Runningriver stood there.
"Streamfur," he addressed his sister, "Take your apprentices for the dawn patrol. Shadowclan thinks they can encroach upon our borders, let's show them we're not down for the count yet."
The black and blue she-cat nodded, and headed for the apprentices den.
"Wolfclaw, take three of your apprentices for a hunting patrol, I'll have the other one patch up the nursery."
The spotted Wolfclaw abandoned his place by the fresh-kill pile and signaled for rustpaw to follow him.
as he passed billypaw and white'paw he paused, and mewed, "you two are joining me on a hunting patrol, get moving."
The two apprentices exchanged unsure glances, and padded after their mentor. Once the patrol was in a dappled clearing, Wolfclaw stopped and turned towards the apprentices.
"I'll be teaching you how to hunt squirrels today." wolfclaw looked at each apprentice in turn.
"Squirrels are fast and can find safety in treetops. You'll need to either catch one while they are distracted, or," he paused, "you'll chase them up the tree. The key to climbing trees is to wrap your front paws around the base, having your back paws handle most of your weight."
He turned towards the tree beside him. It had a round mass of bark that furred over its droop, from the bottom of the trunk it extended outward and upwards, growing straight with a few sparse branches her and there. He extended his front paws and began to climb, his tail dangling behind him. he reached the first branch, tested to see if it could hold his weight, and slowly shifted onto it.
He called down to the group, "Now you try!"
Billypaw stepped forward next to the trunk, and nudged it with her nose. It felt sturdy, so she wrapped her front paws around it and began to climb. The bark felt rough against her pads, but she continued to climb. She reached the first branch, and paused there to see how White'paw was doing.
The white apprentice was trying to climb the tree. The branch began to give under billypaw's weight, and she scurried up to the next one.
"Good job white'paw!" billypaw called down.
