CHAPTER 25: THE BOND

The sage was burning slowly in the quiet room. Its white smoke filling the room with a certain smell and atmosphere as the dim city lights shone weekly into the candlelit room.

Caroline figured they could turn the lights on but for some reason it felt weird to do so. She was standing in front of the window, arms crossed, watching the raindrops stick to the window ledge before they decided to slowly slide down in a melancholic defeat.

She could smell the candles masking the harsh stink the burning sage left behind.

"You could've simply spelled the room," she heard Maddox say.

"Do it yourself," Bonnie's cold reply brought a smile to Caroline's lips. "I'm not wasting power on meaningless things."

"Why? Are you planning on facing a powerful warlock anytime soon?"he retorted, clearly referring to himself.

Bonnie scoffed. "Arrogant, yes. Powerful? I don't think so."

"You two are adorable, really. But we do need to talk about more pressing issues so how about you flirt later?" Klaus spoke pleasantly, though everyone knew this wasn't a suggestion.

"Where's Stefan?" Bonnie question.

"Again with the useless chitchat," Klaus growled rolling his eyes.

"He's out, I sent him to find something," it was Caroline who replied.

The blonde vampire turned around and took one shallow step before descending on the armchair right across from where Klaus sat as if it was his personal throne.

"So, Maddox, care to share with the rest of the group what you discovered?" To everyone's surprise it was not the hybrid who made the demand but his not so patient potential mate to be.

The warlock looked at his master with doubtful eyes. Klaus nodded ever so subtly before catching her eyes for the slightest of seconds. Caroline looked away and back at the warlock who seemed to be more than eager to share the intel.

Caroline guessed he was just proud of his discovery to be so happy to share.

"Let me take you back a couple thousand years, back where the werewolves were the only magical creatures, aside from witches, before the Old Ones - or as you know them, the originals." the warlock started. "Werewolves were divided in three main statuses; Alpha, Beta and Omega. I believe I don't have to explain the ranks to you."

All three in the room shook their heads showing the needed no further explanations.

"Every now and then, the wolf inside would choose a mate for their human host and on full moon the wolf who had imprinted on their mate first would mark the other. It was a ceremony all pack members enjoyed since there was almost always guaranteed that there would be a fight, usually from the female. They didn't like giving up either their rank or freedom for that matter."

"What about the male?" Caroline questioned.

"They didn't really care, especially if their rank was lower," explained the warlock and seeing as everyone was lost in translation the decided to elaborate. "When two werewolves of different rank imprint the outcome on the full moon could be one of the two; the one with lower rank would submit, or they would fight. If the one with lowest rank won they switched ranks. There was no reason for a fight to break out say if they were both betas."

"What happened if two Alphas imprinted on each other?" Klaus asked.

Maddox took a deep breath.

"It's rare, as you can read in the book I left for you," he explained. "Alphas usually preferred betas or even omegas so they would rule the pack without much trouble. A docile mate would allow you to concentrate on pack duties rather than fighting you if they disagreed. But there were cases where Alphas imprinted on She Wolves, or in this case, Alpha females. Never vice versa. When the alpha male challenged the female they battled it out on the night of full moon and until sunrise. If neither conceded and both lived through it they got to be partners, if one won the other would become Beta, if one died so would the other."
