It was half-past twelve when he crossed the border to New Orleans.

The jazz, the smell of food and people were so much different from the last time he was here, yet so similar to that time. He felt weirdly sad to be back here after so many years, as if an old friend you didn't know you missed, coming by to say hi.

He looked at Caroline's sleeping form on the passenger's seat. Her angelic face looking ethereal all relaxed and peaceful. The thick blonde locks framing her beautiful features like a halo. She's been quiet the entire ride to New Orleans, giving him the silent treatment for not telling her what was wrong. He didn't know much himself, to begin with, but she was convinced he did and simply wasn't telling her because he was holding a grudge.

Niklaus drove across the city, the streetlights falling on his stern features harshly as his hands tightening around the steering wheel. He wondered what it all meant. Maddox had told him it had something to do with a ritual of sorts. He kept repeating not to kill her yet. Why? What was so important about this baby vampire that would have a warlock of Maddox's caliber practically beg an Original vampire to spare her life.

"She's important," the witch had told him.

Was she? He wondered.

Klaus stole another glance at the sleeping girl.

She was beautiful, no denying that. Smart, quick on her feet, strong and loved her nature, even if she didn't fully understand it just yet. He'd help her revel in it, she only just needed to let him. But was that enough to catch his fancy these days? Why was her essence captivating his existence this much? Who was Caroline Forbes that dared to invade his mind when he had no plans on letting her do so. And why was she important?!

The phone vibrated at that moment and he looked down to see who it was.

"Stefan?" Caroline wondered obviously woken up by the small vibration and the lively city noise invading through the tainted windows.

"This better be good news!" Klaus growled.

Last he spoke with Stefan he informed the original that Maddox was nowhere to be found. The old witch had told Klaus to meet him at his old house at the edge of the city. Stefan, being closer, arrived sooner than Klaus and Caroline at his old house and had informed the hybrid that his witch was a no see.

"He's not here, Klaus," he informed. "I asked around, even went at Russau's and nothing."

Klaus gritted his teeth. There were two possibilities; either Maddox betrayed and lured him back in the city to trap him, or his enemies got to Maddox and decided to trap him. Either way, this was not good.

"Wait, what's going on?" Caroline asked confused. The last thing she knew he wasn't telling her about what was wrong with her and now the only persons who could and would do that went missing? "Where's your witch?"

"In case you've missed the whole conversation, love, that's exactly what we're trying to find out!" Klaus growled in his most done duh toe. "Listen, ripper, find out what you can. I'm taking Caroline to the plantation house, she isn't safe in the city, not until I have Maddox's explanation on what it is that's going on."

"Your friends arrived a few hours ago, but are you sure you can trust Caroline to them?" Stefan asked again.

"Uhm, hello?" Caroline exclaimed. "I'm right here boys! You don't have to talk as if I don't exist! I am quite capable of protecting myself-"

"You're staying in the house, Caroline and you won't atter a word about it!" Klaus growled talking to her as if she was an irritating little kid.

"I beg to differ!" she said stubbornly. "I'm not a desperate housewife and I'm sick of being locked in a house all the time. You will make me part of whatever plan you have or-"
