Hollowean was approaching and with each day that passed by, Matt seemed to interest me more and more. I found some old notes hidden under his bed once, I read over them and noticed they were writing pieces. Matt was a writer. His work was more philosophical than any teen could fathom, I was intrigued.I spent the rest of the afternoon reading over his pieces, the recent ones really grasped my attention. Matt spoke about science in a philosphical perspective; how we all are just vibrations passing through an aural existence.
Beautiful…
Matt still hadn't made any friends. He didn't seem to care much about it as time went by, and Winona seemed too occupied with house chores to actually notice her son's loneliness, that or he just hid it as well as I did.
Hollowean was here!
I had never actually celebrated the day, not that I didn't want to, I just had nobody to spend it with and was even on holidays, drowned in chores. Anyways, Matt was on the same page as me and didn't even attempt a costume even though Winona and Katy had gone all out.
Billy was finally home. The one day he actually had time for his family and I sure did appreciated it. He didn't bother with a costume, even though he was home, he was held up in his office. Dad's old woodwork room turned into a whiskey-smelling office. I didn't take Billy for an alcoholic, or someone who drank alcohol at all, but then again it shouldn't surprise me, after all you can never truly know a person.
"Matt," Winona entered the room dressed as Catwoman, the black lipstick suited her. "Yeah?" Matt answered, his face hidden behind the bright screen of his new best friend. "Happy Halloween!" Winona cheered, turning the light on. "Mommmm!" Matt moaned, the light piercing both our eyes. Not that I could feel the pain, but I could remember what it felt like in my days of feeling. And I pretty much hated it.
"Oh don't be a boring bugger! Say, why don't you and Katy head out and go trick-or-treating?" Winona sat herself down on Matt's bed right beside him, "Wait, are you serious?" He put his phone down. "Well yeah, you two would enjoy it." She added, "Mom, I'm 17 years old!" Matt exclaimed. "Well, I know. It's just that Katy is 6, and this is her first Hollowean in our new home. I mean, we don't even know our neighbour's and we've been here for weeks, and, you could make some friends…" She finally added.
Guess they do take note.
"Mom, there's no way I'm going trick-or-treating." Matt made up his mind. "Matthew Billy Williams! You will take your sister trick-or-treating tonight or so help me God I will take your phone away from you for the rest of the week!" Winona exclaimed and I finally managed to see the extent of her demanding side that somehow really scared me, despite my brutal past. Her eyes were staring daggers into Matt's; into Matthew, Billy Williams's. MBW, that's what his initials were on his sketches. Good to know.
Matt and Katy headed out. Katy was very excited. She eagerly clutched onto her little bag. I walked beside them and I beckoned to Katy to keep my presence a secret for tonight. I didn't after all, want Matt worrying about his sister's mental health talking about an imaginary friend living in their house. I wanted Matt to enjoy himself, maybe meet someone in the neighborhood.
The dark streets were painted with glows of orange, green and red. A frightening fiasco of pumpkin porches and bat-decorated doors were all that my eyes discovered.
Zombies were laying on the then Hendersons lawn. I had never attempted to get to know the new neighbors despite them living here for years. Nothing seemed to excite me after my escape, well, at least not until the Williams family had arrived.
I followed Matt and Katy over to the house just opposite. Matt knocked on the door and a teen kid opened. "Hey, I know you, don't I?" The boy asked. "Um, no." Matt mumbled, "Trick-or-treat!" Katy pushed her bag out before the boy could say anything else to Matt. The boy looked down at Katy and then up at Matt again and laughed in their faces, "What a bunch of losers." He muttered before slamming the door in their faces.
