Today

"So, this is us." The woman spoke, awaiting my reaction. I just smiled back.

"D'you like it?" The man asked. "It's cozy. I like it." I smiled back and nodded.

She showed me to my new room, which was already decorated. "Oh, I hope you don't mind, Cole and I already decorated your room, we thought you might like it." She added. "It's beautiful." I tried. My suitcase tight in my hands.

The telephone downstairs rang, "It's probably the orphanage calling. I'll go get it." The woman rushed downstairs. "And I'll go get you some snacks. You must be hungry." The man spoke before vanishing. I unpacked and before long I headed downstairs again.

The table was filled with loads of snacks. It was like a child's dream.

"Are there any other kids in the neighborhood?" I broke the silence at the table. "Well, there's a 15 year old that lives just next door. She's the youngest. We spend time with her and her mum." The woman explained, "but don't worry, If you get bored, you could definitely hang out with her. She's only 4 years older than you, and she's very friendly." The woman added. "Didn't her mom say her son was coming to visit this weekend?" Cole spoke, swallowing his chips. "Oh, yeah. They invited us over for a barbecue. What did she say her son's name was again?" The woman asked. "Uh, starts with an M…" Cole answered. "Right. Matthew!" The woman responded.

The man smiled back at her.

"It's going to be nice to meet him, I mean, Winona's always told us about him; The city guy, and she said he recently got engaged." The woman continued. My heart shattered. "This'll be the first time Winona sees her son again since he's been off to college, right?" The man asked. "Yeah, come to think of it." The woman responded. "Oh my, we're just babbling on and boring you. Sorry kiddo..." The man spoke. "No, that's okay. The neighbour's sound fun. I'd like to meet them." I smiled… They smiled back at me. "I'm sure we'll have fun this weekend." Cole rubbed on my back and gave me a warming smile…

I'm sure we will.
