mr and mrs petrova did not make love nine months and eighteen years ago. mrs petrova did not give birth to a girl eighteen years ago. mrs petrova did not give birth to anyone at all since she doesn't exist, nor does mr petrova.
because katerina petrova does not exist. she, among other things, was a lie. fabricated to escape who she truly was.
but she kept her first name, katerina. she allowed herself to that piece of what she once was. "it's a fake name, isn't?" kaz brekker asked one rainy night. the two of them were going over some plans, details on which only the two of them would notice.
she wasn't surprised. if there was someone that could catch up with her lies, it was kaz. "naturally. as is yours." it wasn't a question because she knew it was true. that kaz brekker didn't exist as well.
a hum was her response. "but we don't let that get in the way of what we're doing, won't we?" will nothing change between us? kaz thought.
"of course."
and they went back to work, two people that do not exist but two very much but also barely alive souls.
