-----------------------------------------

Time seemed to move at a snail's pace.

One moment Luis was up, a smile on his face, and the next we were racing toward him as an ocean of blood seeped away from his body.

The door clicked closed behind Saddler as he returned to the hall, robes trailing after him, concealing whatever the hell talon was. A part of me was ready to chase after him, but as the metallic scent of blood stuffing itself in my nose I couldn't help but skid to a stop beside Luis.

"Luis. Luis!" Leon sputtered as his eyes roamed his form, noting the pale color of his skin and the blood dripping from his mouth, "Shit." Leon laced his hands together and began performing CPR.

I looked down at the Luis glassy dark eyes, then to the smear of blood beneath him. Saddler had aimed true and pierced him through the heart. Leon knew that.

I put a hand on Leon's, stopping his hopeless efforts as blood leaked through the cracks between his fingers.

He met my eyes in a silent exchange before dropping his hands to his knees and bowing his head, "FUCK!" The curse rang out in the room, echoing off the arched ceiling.

I stared down at Luis unmoving chest, the vial flickering behind my lids. He could have come with me. He could have said screw it and abandoned the vial and saved his own hide, but he didn't. He'd risked his life to ensure Saddler didn't get his hands on it.

But he did. He has it.

My hands curled into fists at my side. I should have forced him to come with me, then he'd be alive.

"He will pay," I whispered, looking into Leon's stone cold eyes.

"I know," Leon muttered, giving me a single dip of his chin. His glacial stare held mine for a few long seconds, giving me a look at the steely flames settled there. He was furious, just the same as me.

"Ashley," I called, finally climbing to my feet as I avoided the blood, "I'm coming."

"Okay," she muttered, voice hollow like she knew exactly what had happened without needing to see the corpse on the floor.

I stalked toward the nearest railing, using a foot to test its strength. There were cracks in the foundation, but they seemed superficial.  I quickly grabbed my grapple gun and began wrapping the cord around the anchor, ensuring each rotation was tight.

Once I finished, I threw a leg over to straddle the rail. Ashley peered up at me, eyes like saucers even from all the way up here.

Leon finally stopped beside me, offering a hand as I began to slowly situate myself into place to begin lowering myself down. His hand was warm against mine as i spoke, "You'll need to unhook me once I'm down."

"I've got it," He said, ensuring I was in place before unlocking our hands.

I nodded and began my slow descent, focusing on the hiss of the grapple gun in my grasp.

The ballroom below was no in good condition. Pieces of fallen railing were scattered along the floor, many of them cracking the tile beneath them. Columns were topple over, and the few round tables that had been left out were either in pieces of toppled over. A few chairs dotted the space, most of them broken into nothing more than chunks of wood and fabric.

Once my feet touched the ground, Leon began unraveling the anchor on the railing above as I looked to Ashley. "Are you okay?" I asked as Leon managed to release the hook, allowing me to reel it back in. When I was finished, she still hadn't answered.
