A/N: Sorry I haven't updated in a week, my editor has been super busy. Here's a long chapter to make up for it!

"Fuck!" Leon yelled as a symphony of humming echoed throughout the ballroom.

My gaze shot around the room as more insect-like creatures rose from the holes in the floor, each of their four eyes trained on us. I whipped out my weapon, squeezing the trigger as I focused on their small heads.

Legs and wings buckled, but when their bodies slammed into the stone they didn't relent. Each of them jerked and spasmed until they were back on their feet, eyes like large black orbs swinging to us again. They galloped, excited hisses filling the space between wing beats as they closed in on us.

There were almost half a dozen around us, each with spiny exoskeletons and sharp talons to match.

The insect closest to me took leaps and bounds toward me, pincers surrounding its mouth jittering like it was considering just how good I might taste. I fired, forcing it to lunge to the side in an act that didn't slow it down enough. It reared back like a cat preparing to ambush its prey,  and pounced into the air with its sharp talons ready to strike.

I swung around, throwing my foot out to collide with it's thorax before It could get close enough to pierce my flesh. It flew to the side, hissing as it was thrown into a nearby column, chittering as It hit the ground with a heavy thud.  It's legs thrashed around, like it was readying itself to take another flying leap, but I quickly closed the gap between us with my pistol. I fired, the bullet ringing out as it buried itself into the stone, going clean through the beasts skull.

It's head splattered against the cracked floor, leaving behind a slush of tissue and goo as it's legs went stiff.

Another hiss at my back had me whipping around, blindly throwing out my fist in the direction of the sound.

My fist made contact with a bony outer shell of a chest before another insects taloned hand pushed against my wrist. It threw all its weight toward me, hooking the sharp spines of its legs into my torso as it forced my arm back. I tired to throw another first with my remaining free hand, but the insect only pulled back, letting me swing and hit nothing but air before it brought its other arms onto my wrist.

The sound of fabric tearing came as its talons pushed deeper into my stomach, ripping my shirt open as I thrashed against its hold. It continued to force my arms apart until we collided with a column, and I was out of options.

It chortled a sound of delight before it leaned back, summoning a new gurgling noise from deep inside it's chest. The churning and hiss of liquid rose to meet it, and suddenly all I could smell was bile and acid.

Is this thing about to fucking throw up on me?

It's throat spread open, pushing against the flesh of its neck as liquid climbed higher and higher, the evidence of it being the steam rising from its open mouth. The smell and sound of churning acid promised a very painful and very disgusting form of death as I thrashed against it's hold.

Just as I was about to throw myself forward, hoping to take the insect by surprise at the last moment, the weight suddenly folded.

Leon sliced his knife through the joint in its right arm, knocking the beasts grip of balance as it wailed through the liquid in its throat. It fell to the ground, struggling to swallow all the bile it had dragged up as it scrambled to get away. I fell backwards onto my ass as the pressure on my abdomen released, knocking me off balance. With the new loss of appendage, the bug struggled to move which made it easy for Leon to converge on it.
