I stretched out my arms, the pain in my muscles now dulled to an ache thanks to Tylenol. Thank God for Tylenol.
"You good?" Leon asked, his eyes swimming with concern.
I rolled my neck back before answering, "I'll manage."
He didn't look pleased with my answer but I pushed forward, unlocking the gate with the key Leon had fished out of Krauser's pocket. The whine in my muscles slowly waned as we moved past the gate into the rest of the old ruins.
Leon's communicator chimed, making me stop and look back. He schooled the scowl on his face before answering.
"So it seems you've killed Krauser. How should I show my appreciation?" Saddler mused. I looked away from the screen, not wanting to see his predatory features.
"What are you talking about? I thought he was with you," Leon replied flatly.
"What are you talking about? You really thought I would trust an American? No, no- We just needed him to kidnap Ashley. I was actually contemplating ways to get rid of him, but it seems you've saved me the trouble."
"Using him right from the start, a little typical, don't you think?" Leon said, his annoyance leaking through his schooled features.
"Ha ha, perhaps. Either way, you've really proved yourself by taking him out, I can't wait for you to serve as my guard...and of course, Ms. Ir-" My muscles clenched.
Leon cut him off before he could finish my name, "Unfortunately, we'll both be declining your oh so generous offer. We have prior engagements."
I looked to Leon in silent thanks. I couldn't hear anymore about his disgusting role for me.
"Hmm, enjoy your smart mouthing while you can," Saddler frowned. His eyes were moving beyond Leon, like he was searching for me.
"Sure will," Leon replied, hanging up on him.
He looked up at me, and gave me a reassuring smile before moving ahead.
The trail ended at the mouth of some kind of industrial complex that may have been an oil yard at one point. Metal sheets and beams formed hollow buildings and lookouts overlooking the different paths below. The paths split off as they lowered into trenches, where they weaved through the complex to all converge at a set of ruins sitting on the opposite cliffside.
A growing roar suddenly filled my ears, and we looked around for whatever new threat was approaching.
Light filled the yard, and a torrent of air whipped my hair around, making me back away. I wrapped my fingers around my weapon and squinted against the light. My eyes focused on the source of the light- a helicopter.
A smile spread across my face and I couldn't hold back my yell of excitement.
Finally, backup.
"It's about time!" Leon yelled over the roar of the air as the chopper hung low in the air.
The pilot's voice came through a staticy speaker. "Sorry, bad traffic. I'll cover you." The sound of yells rose from the complex. That'll be the welcome wagon.
Excitement bubbled beneath my skin as the helicopter rose to take a position above us. I turned to Leon, unable to hide my excitement, "Do you wanna play a game?"
"What kind of game?"
"Split up. Person with the highest count wins."
He raised an eyebrow, a smile pulling at the corner of his mouth, "You're hurt and you wanna split up?"
