the madrigals
—the day went on, the family slowly backing off on her but the villagers that would come later would not. she had never had to tell so many lies to so many people at once. she knew shed end up forgetting one and mess the whole thing up but it was fine for now. colette continued to text her to ask how it was going and she would respond in a very short message.
"are you excited?" her newest friend, mirabel, came up from behind.
victoria nearly jumped out of her skin from the voice, turning behind and sighing. she seems surprisingly calm for someone who met a family with gifts. mirabels thoughts were true, she needed to do better.
"ah... yes. i've never seen anything like this so im very excited!" she smiled and looked around at the decorated home.
food was being cooked in the kitchen still. if you needed to feed a whole village it would take forever.
"good! the last one... didn't go as planned so its exciting." mirabel sounded sad while she explained the reason for all the excitement.
on victorias ceremony she stood in the middle of the house on the same silver circle as all the others had. her powers were granted and one more room was built into the house. that was really it other than testing everything out.
"are you guys really the only ones with gifts in the world?" victoria wanted a reaction only.
should i tell her about the other family? maybe its good to know... just in case.
"eh... no. theres another family." mirabel sounded somewhat angry when she spoke about victorias family.
"oh really? who?" excitement filled her voice and a smile was slapped back on.
mirabel looked around and moved closer to victoria.
"the romanos, they live in italy. they've been our family enemy for forever."
the moment the last word came out her cousin, dolores ran over.
"dont talk about them, its antonios night." the list of pros and cons of having dolores around was never ending.
mirabel walked off to set up some decorations, leaving victoria with her thoughts. no secrets could be kept in this family and it didnt look like there was much of any phones around. victoria thought about what mirabel had said about her family, wondering how she would react when they found out. she looked up to where mirabel was with abuela to see mirabels once happy face turn to sad.
"i know, mama. but now i cant find antonio. what do you want from me?" pepa screamed in frustration at abuela.
thunder boomed from above pepas head one last time before she stormed off. mirabel walked away from abuela and the woman went to julieta. mirabel snuck into the nursery and sat on the bed, picking a present from the bed side table and sighing.
"everyones looking for you." she told the air, waiting seconds before speaking again.
no response came back to her.
"this present will self destruct if you dont take it!" she dangled the gift near the bottom of the bed.
"3..."
"2..."
1.. oh!" the gift was snatched from beneath the bed.
she slid underneath the bed beside antonio who looked very sad.
