there was water in your shoes. every time you took another step up the stairs to your front porch, you couldn't help the cringe that followed, revolting at the squelching noise that pursued your every move.

"can you hurry up?!" niki rushed from the front door, practically vibrating with impatience as he wrapped his arms around himself. "it's so cold."

you sighed, reaching into your coat's pocket and pulling out a small golden key as the rain grew stronger, spraying underneath the roof of the porch. "there's water in my shoes, and if you tell me to hurry up one more time i will leave you outside to catch a cold, riki."

your boyfriend made a noise that sounded like a mix between a whine and a grunt but stayed silent as his teeth chattered, waiting for you to let him inside.

"i'm hurrying, i'm hurrying," you muttered, fumbling with the lock before opening the door with a push. as niki moved to step inside, you stopped him, reaching an arm out to block his path. "woah there buddy; shoes off right here. my mom'll kill me if we get mud and water all over the rug. especially since she just cleaned the floors yesterday."

niki shot you a glance of annoyance but followed your instructions without argument. just as you started to kick off your own sneakers, niki hastily stepped into the hallway, already peeling off his black coat and setting it on a hook.

he looked over his shoulder at you, his impatience still visible. "are you coming or not?"

"yes," you said instantly, taking his outstretched hand and letting him pull you inside, helping rid yourself of the coat on your back. you rubbed your cold hands together when he faced you yet again.

"so, uh, what do we do now?" niki asked cautiously, his voice quiet as his line of sight lowered. when you met his eyes it was then that you realized just how close the two of you were, standing face-to-face in the small foyer.

you gulped thickly, suddenly intimidated by the small distance between your bodies. "um...we need to change; get out of these wet clothes before we get sick." an idea suddenly popped into your head as you thought out a short plan. "i have some of your clothes that you left here some time ago. my mom had me wash them, so i'll grab those for you to change into while i make something warm for us to drink, okay?"

"okay," niki whispered in compliance, nodding at your answer. wordlessly, he followed you to your bedroom.

he had been to your house probably over a hundred times, and vice versa, but, for some reason, this time felt different, new, exciting. your parents weren't home, whom he assumed were at work, and as he trailed your figure he couldn't help but smile at what was to possibly come within the next hour.

when you opened up your bedroom door, heading for your closet, you glanced behind you. "sorry for the mess. i would've cleaned if i had known you'd be over."

niki scoffed. "you consider this a mess?" he waved his arms around at some of the stray clothes that littered your floor. "this is literally nothing. you should see my room."

"i have," you said, raising your eyebrows playfully as you grabbed the articles of clothing you were looking for. "and you're right, it most certainly is a mess."

taking the pile of clothes, niki glared at you jokingly. "you weren't supposed to agree, ya know."

you let out a small laugh, shoving him with a hand as you walked past, brushing strands of wet hair from your face with the other. "yeah, yeah. take a shower and get dressed. i should be back after i finish making us hot chocolate."
