I rock back and forth on my heels, waiting for my luggage to come around. Nervous was a complete understatement for how I felt right now. And it wasn't for my luggage.
I had asked Martha to bring Alex, and she said she managed to get him to come, but I knew he still didn't want to see me.
Not after what happened to us.
I think the thing I regret most was not trying hard enough to keep my relationship with Alex alive. I mean, there was really no reason for it, I just got sucked up in the record deals and such. But none of that mattered now, for he was coming to the airport to see me. Right now. After eight years. Oh God.
I grab my luggage and then make my way towards the exit. I look around and see my little sister who wasn't so little anymore standing next to my old best friend. She was scanning the room, looking excited, and he was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, not nearly as excited. This was it, the moment I've been waiting for for ten years. I put a smile on my face and run over to them.
"Martha!" I exclaim. She looks over and smiles brightly, opening her arms.
I drop my luggage once I reach her and hug her tightly, picking her up. "Oh, my beautiful baby sister, I can't believe how long it's been." I say.
She hugs me back, giggling softly. "Well, it only took you ten years to get your ass back here." She teases.
I gasp and pull away from the hug, looking at her. "Excuse me, did you just cuss at me?" I ask in a dramatic way.
She rolls her eyes. "I'm not eleven years old anymore, John. I grew up a bit while you were gone."
I nod and chuckle softly. "Yeah, I can see that." I turn towards Alex to see he was trying his best not to pay attention. He was looking off to the side, his arms still crossed over his chest. I sigh softly and Martha nods, encouraging me. "Hey, Alex." I say.
Alex looks over at me, his eyes piercing me right away. He nods. "Hi, John."
I rub the back of my neck. "It's been a while. I'm glad you're here." I tell him, being sincere.
He raises an eyebrow. "Right, I can tell. Should we head back now? I'm sure you've got loads of fans to meet or something."
I sigh and nod. I didn't come here for the fans, I wanted to say. I came here for you.
But I could never say that. Not right to his face. He wouldn't take it very well. Knowing Alex, he would probably blow up at me. He had every right to be mad, I just kind of hoped he wouldn't be.
"Yeah, right.." I bite my lip. "But you know, maybe we should get some dinner? On me. It'd be nice to catch up. Ya know, before the um.. Fans."
Alex hesitates but sighs. "Fine, but only because you're buying."
I smile and look at Martha, who's smiling brightly. "Awesome, let's get going then!" She says.
We walk through the airport, Alex walking behind Martha and I. I lean in slightly to my little sister. "Was he like this the whole ride up here?" I ask.
She nods, not looking at me. "Yep! Don't worry, though, he'll come around, I'm sure of it. I have a plan."
We get to her car and I go to put my stuff in the trunk but she stops me, grabbing my luggage from me. "Nope, I've got no room in the trunk for this." She says with a mischievous grin on her face.
I raise an eyebrow as she rounds the car, opening up the front car door. "They should fit just fine in here on this seat!" She shoves my stuff in and then closes the door as Alex opens the back door, looking at the stuff on the front seat.
