CHAPTER THREE
It took one week. One long week for me to receive the email informing me that I'd been hired at my new job. In fact, that was all the email said. I'd been hired as a personal assistant and my position would be discussed further upon my first day. Other than the time and address included at the bottom of the email, that was it.
My week had been mind numbingly slow, difficult, even torturous at times though I fought it the best that I could. I filled the gaps of time by pestering Samantha over text, working out in the college gym facilities, hanging out with people from my classes, studying things I already knew and spending an unacceptable amount of time on the internet watching funny animal videos. The entire world seemed to be frozen until the day finally came. My first day at my new job.
I barely got any sleep the night before.
Monday. 7:42am.
I was early.
After receiving the email with the address, I was delighted to find that the building was only about a fifteen minute car ride away from campus. I ordered a ride through a ride-share app and it was cheap enough that I knew it wouldn't pose an issue throughout my time working there. My driver, who I found out through idle chatter was a man named Troy that had two lovely young grandaughters and a dog named Rufus, dropped me off in front of a very tall building that was all steel and glass. Just glancing at it wasn't enough to help me guess how many floors there were. I just knew there were a lot.
There was a short set of concrete steps, a long flat landing, and then another small set of steps that led to the front door. A few people stood outside the front of the building, smoking cigarettes, standing in little groups. They all had on very plain looking suits and I almost couldn't distinguish one person from another. That morning, I'd decided to go for a plain, gray button up shirt, tucked into black slacks, with a black belt and dress shoes. One look around told me I would need to go shopping for more business attire soon.
I strode past them all, ignoring the curious looks, the eyes I could feel on me, all the way to the front door. It was big, made of glass, and there were Japanese characters followed by the word 'Organization' above the door. That was when I realized I didn't even know the name of the place and that all Mr. Vognette mentioned was that it was a law firm or something.
I probably should've paid better attention.
The front doors were unbelievably heavy, so much so that, I couldn't even tell if they were push or pull at first. Once I finally squeezed inside, I walked up to the receptionist and smiled as if nothing happened though, from the look on her face, she'd seen everything.
"Hello! I mean- good morning." I greeted.
I could feel my cheeks heat up and I momentarily cursed my complexion.
I was darker skinned, half Black on my father's side, but not dark enough to hide the faint redness that occasionally came to my cheeks. I wasn't even someone who usually got embarrassed, like even when I tripped over caution tape and rolled on the ground, but then again, I wasn't someone who usually took nearly three minutes to open a door in public either.
The receptionist, a pretty young woman with ginger hair, smiled at me and managed to keep from laughing or furthering my embarrassment.
"Good Morning! What can I do for you today?" she inquired, her voice light and airy.
"My name is West Monroe and I'm a student at Waveway University. I'm supposed to be working a personal assistant position here through the Student Employment program."
