CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"I want more from you Monroe."
Saturday. Around 11am. The Kitaru Organization building.
I was in a good mood. The first portion of my shift had been normal, like any other average day. Since my shift was a total of 10 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, I got two thirty minute breaks and an hour lunch. I used the first thirty minute break to talk to Samantha in the breakroom, thankful that the building had good wifi so the video call wasn't constantly disconnecting. I showed her around the building a little bit, trying to be discreet, sneaking around corners and ducking into empty offices like a spy on a mission. It was unnecessary but I had fun doing it and Sammy seemed amused.
I finally remembered to send her all the pictures from the gala too. There were some I took myself along with others that Adam and Clara took and I used part of my break to tell her a bit about it. It was hard to believe that it had been nearly a week since the gala happened. In some ways it felt like it had been less time and in others it felt like it had been forever.
It's been forever since we were in that dressing room.
I tried not to think about it, especially as I returned from my break and walked through that mahogany door. The moment the door closed behind me and I walked up to Ms. Mori's desk to ask if she wanted anything, she stopped me and told me exactly what she wanted.
"More from me?" I repeated, confused.
She gestured for me to sit down. At some point, the chair I usually grabbed from beside the bookcase found permanent residency in front of her desk. I didn't have to bring it over anymore.
"Yes, that's what I said. I've been thinking about it for a while now and I'd like to give you a bit more responsibility. You've been doing well with the work I've given you and so I want to involve you in the organization more."
I smiled when she said I was doing well. I figured that I was, especially considering I still had a job, but it was nice to hear anyway.
"Thank you very much for the opportunity. What do you need me to do exactly?"
"During the month of November I'll be having meetings with some of the organization's clients. These clients are people who have essentially completed their betterment through whatever service they took part in. People finishing their rehabilitation, people who've won their cases, people who've found work through us." she explained.
I didn't think I would ever stop being amazed by The Kitaru Organization.
"Okay, so what are the meetings for?"
Ms. Mori sighed. She seemed tired, both in general and tired by the conversation matter.
"They want to thank me. I've always found, since I first began my work, that right around the time people finished with their service they would request meetings with me. It results in hundreds of meeting requests, all the time, and so finally I decided that I would just set aside a few days throughout the year to have meetings with a select few clients. I let Adam pick them for me. It doesn't look very good if I'm too distant with our clientele."
That made sense. If someone completely turned my life around, got me a job, got me the help I needed, got me a second chance? I'd want to thank them too.
"That's nice that people want to thank you in person."
Her dark eyes narrowed at me slightly.
"I hate the meetings."
"Oh."
Ms. Mori sighed again and stood up from her desk. I watched her walk over to the decanter table and was surprised to see her pour herself a drink. She must've really wanted it badly because she didn't even ask me to pour it and I was sitting right there. The warm, honey colored liquid streamed into the short glass, stopping halfway to the top when Ms. Mori placed the bottle back down. She walked back over to the desk and leaned against the edge instead of sitting down.
