CHAPTER NINE

"Oh God West stop, I can't take it!" Samantha whined. She was practically shaking underneath me and I couldn't help but laugh.

It was Tuesday night and I was forcing Sammy to watch scary movies with me in my dorm room. We had movie nights pretty often, propped up against the headboard of my bed with my laptop open on the comforter in front of us. She hated watching scary movies but I loved it and usually found that, if I asked nicely, and gave her my best pouty face, she would cave.

We were watching some kind of combination zombie werewolf picture that was free to stream and I had just caught her trying to cover her eyes again. I was trying to pull her hands away and she was twisting to get away from me.

"Oh come on, this one isn't even scary! It's so poorly made. I've seen a boom mic slip into frame like, five times!"

I'd managed to shove myself behind her, squished between her back and the headboard, and I grabbed one of her hands but I couldn't get the other one. I was planning on giving up soon anyway, I just liked to tease her a little.

"I know that! The microphone scared me twice because I couldn't tell what it was and- West I can't breathe!"

"Oops."

I realized my hand was completely covering her face and I quickly let go and rolled back over to my side of the bed. Sammy's face was as red as it could possibly get, her glasses were crooked and her hair was wild on top of her head. I didn't even try to hold back my laugh, positive I must've looked like a mess too. She rolled her eyes, though she couldn't wipe the smile off her face, and tried to put herself back together.

"Do you wanna watch something else? We could watch something funny, even though this movie is already hilarious, or we could do a romcom situation."

I paused the movie, which was called Zom-wolf Were-bie, and started scrolling through the other movies available. Samantha sighed from her spot next to me.

"I'd really love to but it's getting late and I'm getting tired. I think I should head back to my own dorm now. I've got class tomorrow morning."

She was right. The time read 11:46pm on my laptop and we'd already watched another movie before the second. She had class at nine in the morning and I knew Sam needed to get her rest.

"Yeah, I guess it is getting late."

She shimmied off the bed and started putting on her shoes. I followed her lead and searched for my own, grabbing a hoodie from my dresser beside the bed to pull over my t-shirt.

"I'll walk you."

"Thanks."

I grabbed my keys from the hook beside the door, found my slides near the foot of my bed and double checked that I wasn't leaving anything behind. Then we stepped out. The dorm rooms were kind of more like small studio apartments that sat next to each other in rows. For freshman year we were all crammed in one big building and some people got stuck with 2, 3, or even 4 other roommates, but that changed our sophomore year. I lived with Douglas on Ocean Row and Sammy lived with her two roommates, Bobai and Avery, on Coast Row around the corner.

It was a nice night, not to cold despite it being mid-October. I took a deep breath and looked over at Sammy. She seemed to be in her own little world, so I didn't bother her, keeping to myself instead.

I could hardly believe it was almost Wednesday. It had already been over a week since my first day at the organization, though I hardly counted that first Monday since I wasn't there my whole shift. Everything had been normal lately. The remainder of my shift Saturday, and both my Sunday and Monday shift had been pretty unremarkable. I got my ID card Sunday morning and I'd already found a good routine with coffee runs, mail runs, document deliveries, etc. I had lunch with Adam and Clara everyday and we all got along really well despite me being such a new addition to their duo.
