CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Sunday, December 1st, I arrived outside of The Kitaru Organization building for the first day of my third, and final month on the job. My driver's name was Veea Mori and she told me she was the CEO of an amazing organization that was not just a law firm. She also told me that she would never allow me to drive her car and that she would shove me in the trunk if I ever asked again.
We pulled up at exactly 8:55am and when we got out of the vehicle, Mr. Alcott was already there to to open Mori's door for her and take her keys. I got out of the passenger side, met her at the front of the car and she took my hand in her own as we started walking towards the building. I felt kind of nervous and, predictably, Mori didn't seem to feel anything at all.
"Is this really okay? You're positive this is okay?"
I knew she didn't like to repeat herself, but I felt like I had to ask.
"You know I don't like to repeat myself. If I say it's fine, it is."
Then we were walking through the front doors, hand in hand, and the few people in the lobby stared. No one said anything, they just stared. That lasted all of a few second before Mori let go of my hand and started walking to the elevator. I turned to her immediately, confused.
"Why'd you let go?"
"You're going to greet Ms. Valentine, right? I have to go meet with Kelsey and Winston."
"Oh, right."
I could tell she was amused by my reaction, but she decided not to say anything and then told me she'd see me upstairs later.
Wow, that was really anticlimactic.
"Oh my gosh! West! Did you and Ms. Mori just walk in holding hands?!"
Yay, Clara!
Clara Valentine was gaping at me, forrest green eyes huge on her face. I hurried over to the reception desk and her look didn't waver once.
"Good morning Clara! Sorry we didn't talk yesterday and, yeah, we were holding hands."
I think she tried to widen her eyes even more, but there was no room to.
"Omg, and what does that mean? Did you guys dress up like cheetahs last night? Hm?"
I overshared once and this is my penance.
"Seriously?"
Clara giggled and waved a hand at me.
"Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously though, does this mean you guys are a thing?"
I nodded and she gasped, then squealed, completely giddy.
"Aww, West, I'm so happy for you! This is so exciting! You have to tell me everything."
"I promise I will, but I think I should head upstairs now. I'll see you later for lunch though, okay?"
"Later for lunch."
I gave her a wave and then made my way over to the elevators. Mr. Lee was there, and it reminded me of the last time I saw him. I didn't know if I should say anything, and so I just gave him my usual "Hello!". He gave me his usual nod, never saying a word, never even making a face to indicate something was different, and so I continued on, up to the 32'nd floor.
When I stepped out and walked up to Adam's desk, I could barely get a single word out.
"Hey Ad-"
"Your hand was in her hand?! Oh my gosh West, I can't believe it!"
Clara.
"Did Clara text you while I was on my way up here? I was just down there."
