CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
The next day, Monday, Ms. Mori was out of her office for the entirety of my shift. My mind continually tried to convince me that she was doing it to avoid me, but her schedule, which I'd input into the system myself, told me she just had a lot of meetings and I needed to cool my jets.
I missed her.
I missed her and it made me think about the fact that I shouldn't miss her, which made me think of the warning she gave me, which made me wonder how she really felt. It was a new set of thoughts I was tempted to run away from.
I kind of knew what we were from the start and, I was okay with it, especially because I didn't want to be in another relationship anyways. It was fun and exciting and there was never any need to put a label on things. There still wasn't, but I had to wonder if I was alone in having extra feelings on the side. I had to wonder if she ever caught herself thinking about me the way I caught myself thinking about her. Did she like me too much, the same way that I liked her too much?
Frick. Probably not.
When I met with Adam and Clara for lunch that day, I decided I wanted to do something fun.
"I'd like to hang out with you guys."
They both turned at the announcement and I realized the statement came out sounding a bit intense.
"Okay, no need to declare it. When?" Adam raised an amused brow at me.
"Can we hang out today after work?"
Clara smiled at the idea, already nodding her head before we'd even decided on the details.
"Omg yay!" she clapped her hands in excitement, "What should we do?"
"Oooh, lets get drinks!"
My face fell and Clara rolled her eyes at Adam, quickly searching the table. She picked up a balled up piece of tissue and threw it at him, very poorly, and Adam smacked it back at her.
"West is only nineteen dummy. We can't go for drinks." she explained.
Adam looked at me and shrugged.
"Let's go without him."
"ADAM!"
"I'm kidding Clara!" he waved his hand dismissively, "I still want to get drunk though. Let's just hang out at your apartment. We'll have a girl's night. Does that sound good West?"
"Sure," I laughed, "I'd love to have a girls night with you guys."
The rest of lunch was filled with gossip about people in the building, which honestly made it feel like we were already having some kind of "girls night". I knew Adam only called it that to tease me, but it didn't bother me one bit. I was too excited to be hanging out with them. Honestly, I think that part of me was feeling lonelier than usual without Sam or Ms. Mori around. All I knew was that I needed my friends and I was lucky enough to have Adam and Clara.
After work, the three of us headed over to Clara's apartment, with myself in Adam's car and Clara leading the way in her bright orange one. Her place looked the same once we finally got upstairs, although I was surprised to find she'd gotten a few more plants to add to her already huge collection.
"Is it hard taking care of all these plants?" I had to ask.
They were mainly kept in the corner of the living room next to the television, right in front of the room's only window. I couldn't name any of them, but some of them were flowers, some of them were just greenery and one of them was in a pot hanging from the ceiling. The ceiling plant had long vines flowing out of it and I could see how Clara was trying to find room for them to grow.
