when we entered the school gate, he was there standing on the stairs that lead inside the school
"it's been ten minutes, chances are he is waiting for you?" Heeseung says.
i told him about my situation after cram school yesterday, he's the only one who listens without asking multiple and sensitive questions in return.
"how are we supposed to get inside like this?" i ask as we keep hiding behind a huge tree everyone says has been here since forever.
"you." Heeseung points his finger at me. "not us but you. i have nothing against him!"
"neither do i!"
"then why are we hiding here in the first place? it's your problem, you deal with it." heeseung fixes his glasses and moves to take step ahead but i hold him back by his arm.
"i don't think i'm ready." my eyes are fixed on the ground.
Heeseung sighs, "your hair's a mess today," he's trying to change the topic to prevent hurting me and i can see right through it. "you shouldn't have ditched Jay for me, it'd be easier if he was with you."
he removes my grip on his arms and peeks at Sunghoon. "he isn't even budging, sure is waiting for you"
"but i– "
"it's not like you can be here forever, Jake." Heeseung sighs. "hiding isn't the option." he says firmly. i can see now, why most people think Heeseung is rude when he's not. he's just candid. and he's right.
"it's gonna be okay, i'm right here." he assures and we start walking but i can't look up.
is it now?
"Jake!"
my heart starts to pound crazily when i hear him call. having heeseung by my side doesn't help with things like these. Sunghoon reaches us before we could reach him and now we're standing in the foreground of our school with every passerby staring at us.
"i'm sorry, Jake," what?what is he even sorry for? i look at him, shook. "i tried my best to meet you after the performance but it took longer than usual in changing." he smiles like an idiot. "but you saw me right?"
i did, now i wish i hadn't.
"you must have been in hurry, the others told me–" Sunghoon takes a step closer and i back off nervously.
"Jake, what's wrong?" though i don't look at him, i can feel his smile fade away in his words. "are you still upset? i- i'm sorry."
"stop this."
"what? Jake what's– "
"let's stop this. please." Heeseung behind me lends me his hand and i squeeze it behind my back. my legs have gone powerless and i struggle to stand and look into Sunghoon's eyes, "let's not talk anymore."
Sunghoon parts his lips to say something but i rush past him. Heeseung stays behind talking to Sunghoon.
my legs finally give in mid stairs to the first floor. i sit down with my face in my palms.
i don't know after how long Heeseung comes and sits beside me. "eight more minutes till the first bell. you can cry in despair until then."
