"Stand back," Finn said as the back doors burst open, three more villain kids running in. "Benny, I said stand back!"
"I told you so!" Audrey chimed in from the audience until Finn threatened her with the wand.
"Although I would love that," Bea quipped quietly, so only her brother could hear. She pushed past his shoulder and advanced towards her friend fearlessly.
"Come on. Revenge time," Hugo tried.
Bea didn't let her eyes stray from Finn, afraid she'd be distracted from a certain boy behind her shoulder. "Bea, back up!" Finn said forcefully.
Bea continued forward until the wand was up against her chest. "Or what, Finn? In what world would you actually hurt me?"
"Back up," Finn said, this time a pleading wobble in her voice.
"You don't have to do this."
"We have no choice! Our parents-"
"Your parents made their choice!" Bea said confidently. "It's about time you make yours... But what you don't realize is you already have. You guys think you're tough, but you're horrible liars. Horrible... We're friends. And I know you didn't fake that because I don't think you're capable."
"I just want to be good," Finn whimpered.
Bea didn't let her eyes break from Finn's. "You already are."
"How do you know that?"
"Because I've seen it! Because I've seen Esme cheer for the tourney team like there's no tomorrow and ignore all the assholes who tell her she couldn't do it. Become their friends, even. And I've seen Hugo put all of his effort into learning to be better. At tourney, at school, and at loving himself. And... I've seen Eros embrace having a team around him. And embrace-"
"Embrace you," Eros filled in.
Bea cut her eyes over to him so quickly, he almost didn't catch it. But Bea saw the sincerity in his eyes and it was all she needed. "And I've seen you become more yourself than you realize. You're still a smartass." Finn laughed lightly as her grip on the wand loosened. "But you love and care for your friends more than anyone I've ever met. That's the real reason you're doing this. Not because your parents asked you to. But because you're scared of what they'd do to you and Esme and Hugo and Eros if you didn't... but they can't reach you here.
"So, it's just you and me. What's it gonna be?"
"You've never been afraid of me. Or any of us. Not for a second," Finn said.
Bea shook her head. "I told you. It's like I knew you... Before we'd even met."
Esme put her hand on Finn's back. "We're with you. Let's do the right thing," she said. Finn's eyes closed exhaustively as she felt Hugo's and Eros' hands added to her back.
