CORDELIA TATE WONDERED what people would think if she slipped away into the darkness, never to be seen again. she thought about how no one would care, and how quickly everyone would forget. she had didn't have a death wish but always wondered what would happen if she died or disappeared. she fell into an empty void of silence, slowly withering away as she continued to fall. she would rather have silence than the constant yelling that went on between her parents.
maybe, if she just left the outerbanks, life could be perfect. she could live in new york city—the tourist spot. an apartment where you could see everything, the cars rushing down the street and the lights shining in every building. at this point anything could be better than the beach all day. outerbanks, the worst place on earth.
no matter how much her thoughts displayed it, she didn't want to leave the outerbanks. she just had a creative imagination. the type of bizarre imagination that caused her to leave the real world. but no matter how much she distracted herself, she couldn't distract herself from the real world.
throughout her life, it seemed like everyone betrayed her. she didn't have much hope for the humans after what she had gone through. that was the reason she was cold to everyone. she didn't want to let anyone close enough to hurt her.
during her dark childhood, her father would drown himself in thousands of beers. it seemed like a good idea at the time, but after every beer, he would get angrier. he would start to yell at cordelia about everything she did wrong, telling her that she would never be good enough. cordelia started to believe it, and she knew she would never be perfect enough to please her father. at one point the yelling started to escalate, and her father threw empty beer bottles at her, which gave her scars she would never talk about. she would always run away hide in her room, and fall into her imagination. wonder what life would be like if everything hadn't gone so wrong.
