Chapter Twenty-Eight

"Nice job," Hades said with enough sarcasm to drown an entire realm, "You're only out there for a few hours and come back with a punctured stomach. You're lucky the pole didn't catch it and send it flying... Because then I'd have to go looking for it if I wanted to do any testing on your fucked up DNA."

I grimaced as Hades pulled the bandages tight around my torso, then clipped them in place. He tossed me my spandex shirt and I jerked it over my head, sliding off the medical table. I paused in the process of putting on my shirt, watching Hades shove his tools back into a drawer, slamming it shut with enough for that part of the tool cart smashed into the wall. I frowned.

"It's none of my business," I said dryly, "But you're going to destroy our medical equipment if you keep doing that. And by our, I mean yours." Hades shot me a dirty look, then stalked out past the curtains that separated my bed space from the one beside me. A second later, Akin came into the room, shaking his head. He beamed when he saw me, however, taking my arm against him so he could pull me down gently for a kiss.

"Hades is... angrier than usual." I pointed out under my breath. Akin nodded grimly.

"Lucifer's been pissy since he brought Tsukuyomi here. I even tried to help a little by telling Tsukuyomi to be careful. I think I'm more worried about him than Lucifer. I mean, I know Hades wouldn't leave my dad for Tsukuyomi. I just think Lucifer's been really stressed lately and he's taking it out on other people." He explained. I couldn't agree more. For a moment I thought it had been what I did to scare Akin, but after a while, I realized Lucifer was dealing with something completely different. Whatever it was, it was making him crazy enough to even take it out on Hades, and no one took out their anger on Hades.

He was Hades.

Anyone who stepped near him wrong was a target.

I almost felt sorry for the god.

Almost.

"Anyway," Akin sighed, "We'll deal with it after the war. Right now, I have Menoetius hiding out in one of the meeting rooms." I frowned.

"Why?" I asked. Akin frowned at me.

"Baby, I get you're on board with the whole letting a Titan help us out and I don't mean anything that bad against the Titans... But you have to remember that not everyone has that same mindset... Actually, no, that's not very honest of me. Hannibal, everyone hates Menoetius and if you leave him alone, someone's going to try and kill him." He explained bluntly. I winced.

And Akin said I wasn't clumsy. I was an idiot to think I could leave Menoetius, of all people, alone in Greek territory.

"Which room? Sir." I added when Akin arched a brow at me. He gestured for me to follow and I stuck close by as volunteer nurses and doctors ran back and forth, rushing to heal the injured soldiers that were being wheeled by. The eerily familiar sounds of moaning and whimpers of pain cut me to the quick, and I flinched away from a female soldier who screamed as a male soldier died on the table nearby, crumbling into dust the way most vampires did when they passed away. The stench of burnt flesh and hair made my nose tingle and I was grateful to be out of the military hospital room Hades had set up for the soldiers.

We made our way down one of the tall narrow corridors of Hades's palace, heading straight for a meeting room down the hall. Once upon a time, these corridors were empty and cold, much like Hades, now they were full of bustling soldiers and medical staff rushing to tend the wounded and make reports about the battles that ensued outside.

Even from deep within the palace, I could hear explosions rocking the world around us, the palace groaning as if it were in pain. The sound of gun fire was hidden beneath it.
