Fireworks

"I got the screw" Kelly says as he walks through my door. "What happened to you?" 

"Its 7 in the morning on our day off. I woke up to you banging on the door"

"I got the screw" he says innocently like it's a defense as he holds up the screw

"I'll make coffee" i sigh as i turn leaving the door open for him to come in.

We're on a call where Casey got lucky he didn't burn through his gear and the place had homemade gasoline fire bombs in the ceiling. The lieutenants and chief are talking to someone in arson.

We're sitting around listening to Kelly's dad speak when he and Boden step out. We hear arguing and Kelly goes after them. 

"Well, okay then" i say as i stand up and go outside when my phone rings. I hear a couple chuckles as i leave.

"Hey Alex" i say into the phone. 

"I miss you" i hear him say

"I miss you too"

"How's the new firehouse?"

"It's good, it's really good actually."

"Good, no one's ass i need to kick?"

"No, Alex. No one's ass you need to kick. How's the hospital?"

"It's good. The follow ship is going well. We got new interns. They're stupid"

"You're acting like you weren't a stupid intern, once upon a time. And didn't everyone hate you?"

"Shut up"

"I'm just saying"

"And i said shut up"

"Okay, okay"

"So rumor around here is that you have a new boyfriend"

"What?" I say in a bit of shock

"Bailey said she was talking to you on the phone and heard a boy, said we would meet him at the wedding. Pissed Jackson off so bad that if you tried to speak to him he would snap"

"He doesn't get to do that. At least i waited for the relationship to end"

"I know. Hunt told him off for his attitude. Sent him home."

"Well thank you, Hunt" I say as Kelly walks over to me. I smile at him and he smiles back while he waits for my conversation to end

"So is it true? You have a boyfriend?"

"No, it's not. I had a friend help fix my shower" I say as Kelly looks at me knowing i'm talking about him "She heard him and made an assumption"

"But he is coming to the wedding?"

"I'm not sure yet. He was going to but i think with everything going on. I'm coming back alone"

"You won't be alone" Alex says to me.

"I know. Look i've got to go but i'll call you tomorrow after shift"

"Okay. I love you"

"I love you too." I hang up the phone before i turn to Kelly "Hey, everything okay?"

"I thought i was coming with you to the wedding?"

"Yeah, you were, are, i don't know" i sigh "i think with your dad being here and Leslie trying to get pregnant and all the mess back in Seattle, i might go alone." He looks down and nods "It has nothing to do with you Kelly. More to do with me. With the plane crash being recent and all the mess of the aftermath. It'll be more stressful than everything happening here. Also i'll be staying there a big longer cause of the lawsuit."

"I know. I'm not upset. I get it"

"But i promise. Next wedding, I'll make sure you're my plus one." He smiles at me.

 We're all eating in the beanery.

"You guys close to opening?" Matt asks

"A few weeks, hopefully" Gabby replies. 

"Hey, Shay, where's your ipad?" Cruz asks

"I put it away for a bit"

"You find a donor?" 

"Re-grouping"

"So you're not going the whole sperm donor route anymore?"

"What is this, an interrogation? i told you i'm regrouping" Okay well damn

Peter and Gabby are answering Otis' question about who asked who out and i notice that Casey seems annoyed by the question. Well damn Casey, wrong time to have feeling for the girl.

After a little bit we say goodbye to Benny who's headed home. 

"Bye Benny" I say as he holds his hand out for me to shake 

"Thank you" He says referring to my forgiveness and the conversation from last shift, before he turns to Otis as i go to sit on the couch

Peter comes out and wants to talk to Benny

"The lambert tree award" Peter starts "It's the highest award awarded to a firefighter. My father was nominated and everyone up the line signed off on it, except for you. Just curious as to why?"

"Some other time kid, okay?" He replies. He's hiding something and by the way he is looking at Boden, so it the chief

"Is this what you're trying to say to me? Do you feel bad not signing off for it? That even though my father was a hero and even though he gave his life-"

"It was an award for valor" Benny screams cutting Peter off.

"Benny!" Boden says stoping Benny from continuing. 

"He wants to hear it" Benny says to Boden "I'm gonna tell him. In the middle of that fire, your father panicked and pulled off his mask which would have been his business, except another guy died trying to save him. So, no, i didn't sign it. Because i could not, in good faith, reward someone for demonstrating cowardice-" Benny gets cut off by Peter punching him. The boys get up and pull them away from each other.

"You want to know why Boden doesn't think your father wasn't at fault?" Benny yells "do you? Cause he's an optimist i guess?" He turns and leaves. Boden then tells Peter to go home.

"Tough shift" Kelly says as he walks beside me as we leave work. He grabs my bag as he walks me to my car. He's been doing it a lot recently and every time i argue with him that i can carry my own bag he always says 'but you shouldn't have to' so i've stopped arguing with him about it.

"Tell me about it" i sigh "You alright?"

"Yeah. Leslie wants me to be the father of her baby" Kelly says once we reach my car.

"Well, damn." i say

"What do you think?"

"I think my opinion doesn't really matter"

"Yes, it does." He says

"I think you'll be a great dad." i say with a small smile

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, so if you want to do it, you should." he nods his head "Look i'll be gone for a few days, so i won't be here to keep your stupid in check" I say causing him to laugh "Don't do anything dumb"

"No promises" He says as he reaches over and opens my car door for me. Also something he does. I go the get in and as i do he reaches forward and kisses my cheek. "Be safe" He whispers. I nod not being able to find any words. I get in and smile at him as he shuts the door.
