Ten days after the accident, Michel opened his eyes and asked for food; the strict diet brought back the lost energies. At first, the boy felt disoriented, like when we wake up from a deep sleep.
The Doctor. Bradley had supervised the battalion of examinations to which Michel was subjected, but no physical disability was found. After three weeks of observation, the boy was discharged.
Now Michel was running around the infirmary, saying goodbye to everyone. Now recovered, he was getting ready to return to the life and routine of a six-year-old boy.
Scarlett, as she watched her son, told herself insistently that it had all been a big nightmare and that, after all, she had woken up to reality.
Back at Chris's, quieter house, Scarlett remembered the last month. During the day, all attention was focused on his son, while at night he only had eyes for his lover.
Chris and she shared a sanctuary where there was no past or future. Making love had become an addiction that sharpened Scarlett's senses, added color to her life, a delirium that had been dormant until then. Chris was possessive, passionate, teasing and affectionate at the same time. She loved him without worrying about possible regrets; she wanted to grasp the world with her hands, not caring about the
consequences.Paul wasn't surprised to see them together; the daughter-in-law's joy didn't need any comment.
It was good for Scarlett to know that no one was demanding a definitive position on Chris. At that point, she didn't feel able to reason. The twins couldn't have welcomed the news better: they too had been bewitched by Chris Evans' charm.“He's nice,” Christian said on one occasion. - It's not like you told us!
– He knows who is who. - Michel looked at his brother. – Christian and I switched places yesterday when Uncle Chris came to visit. He told Christian to get out of bed.
With that comment, Scarlett realized how involved the boys were with Chris. They would be very sorry if the relationship ended.
Chris never talked about his own feelings, hidden behind his blue eyes, and he avoided mentioning the subject. Scarlett couldn't guess his thought, as she usually did in the office: she had left the "secretary" category to assume the "lover" post.
She loved him silently, afraid to embarrass him if he came out. Maybe Chris thought that relationship would deteriorate once Scarlett returned home with the twins.
She had decided that morning to talk to Chris and set things straight.
She couldn't always live on the fringes of so many doubts. She left Michel in the care of Mrs. Parsons and went up to the fourth.
Chris finished getting ready, straightened his tie in front of the mirror. He smiled as he saw her enter, his eyes filled with memories of the night before.
Scarlett faltered. She loved the way he looked at her, the determined features of that face, the arrogant nose. She could feel the soft strands of blond hair between her fingers. She loved him so much...but he would hurt her terribly.
– Chris… It's time for us to go home. You've been very kind to us, but...
Security deserted her: Chris was looking at her disturbingly. She had said it all wrong!
– Was I very kind to you, Scarlett? Just that? You must be disappointed.
A lump formed in Scarlett's throat; the words disappeared...she couldn't answer.
– The doctor advised Michel to stay at home for a while and calmly return to his routine. He also said that Michel is a little spoiled with all this attention...
