Max and Charles arrived separately at the FIA gala.
Max had gone through the, what he thinks of as torture, styling process. To be honest he also wasn't looking forward to the long and boring prize giving ceremony. To summarize events like this were not really his thing.
Charles has been going to these type of things for as long as he can remember. He had become good at pretending he loves them.
Max had passed the photo area and took his place at the table.
Charles sat down in the back of the crowd, soon being joined by Carlos and Lando. Max took a quick glance at where they were sitting. They were all together. He envied them, he had to watch this boring show all by himself. Of course it wasn't all bad, it was quite the cherry on top, making his championship official.
As soon as the show started his mind was changed. It was not boring at all. He had trouble holding his laugh. It was so awkward and strange. The most awkward and laughable ceremony he had ever attended.
(au: I recommend to watch this video if you want to laugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fHaSOkYtLA. It's also on top of the chapter :))
"I am starting to regret my decision to come." Charles whispered. Both Lando and Carlos nodded in agreement. "Poor Max had to stand there, on stage, only to hear the kid say that Lewis is the best driver." Lando said making Charles chuckle.
Max just wanted to go back to his hotelroom, not wanting to be here anymore. He was leaving tomorrow and wanted to prepare for that, but no, he was stuck here for another hour or so.
The point came for Max to receive his trophy.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, please put your hands together and give a massive show of respect to the 2021 FIA Formula 1 world champion: Max Verstappen." The hostess said.
Max stood up to make his way over to the stage, others stood up to give him a give him a standing ovation. Charles also got out of his seat and applauded for the Dutchman. Max received the trophy stepped forward and held it up.
However Charles had feelings for the young man he could not help but be a bit sour. His whole life had revolved around becoming a Formula 1 world champion, preferably before Max. Seeing the man he had battled with for the majority of his life lift the trophy, stung a little.
As soon as Max started talking all Charles' jealously disappeared. He instead was looking at him in awe.
He looks so good. That suit looks very good on him. Everything he says is just said in the right way.
In that moment Max's eyes looked for Charles in the crowd and crossed them for a second.
Please, never let this end. Max thought as he saw Charles smiling up at him. He lost his words a little, picking it up again by saying 'you know' a bit too many times.
He ended his speech and left the stage again. That luckily being the end of the gala.
Max was now in the passenger seat, being driven back to the hotel by his driver. He had not even been able to talk to Charles due to all the fuss and the camera's.
Charles...
Max was leaving tomorrow and he would not be able to see him for a while.
"Can you stop the car?" He asked.
He called Charles, hiding his phone from view
"Hi" Charles answered his phone after two tones.
"Where are you?" Max asked him a bit hasty.
"I am in my hotel"
"What hotel? I will come" Max was not leaving any space for discussion.
