1938 | NEW YORK

WITH AUTUMN APPROACHING, Calista had taken a break from ballet to focus on her life as a married woman. Thomas' house on the outskirts of New York had become their home that Calista had designed and decorated while keeping the touch that Frank had originally left behind.

When she wasn't working on their home, Calista was taking up shifts at the hospital still. On the morning when Calista's life changed, she had been helping the staff reorganise the playroom for the children. Calista had taken a bag of broken toys to the bins outside the hospital, where she had heard a baby wail from nearby.

Calista's heart broke as she found a baby abandoned in a box near the hospital. It was wrapped up in a blanket, but the morning air was chill. The tiny face was crinkled, crying from the lack of love and warmth.

"Oh my," whispered Calista, picking up the baby. "You poor thing."

Forgetting about the toys, Calista hurried back inside, shouting out for someone to help as she feared for the baby's health. There was a commotion as the baby was taken from Calista's arms, where a doctor rushed the poor child into a treatment room to check the infant over. Calista followed, explaining where she had found the baby and repeatedly asked if she was well.

"She was lucky that you found her, Calista," the doctor explained after as the baby was now sleeping, wrapped warmly in new clean blankets. There was colour coming back to her cheeks with the cold being shaken.

"Will she be okay?" Calista asked.

"Yes," said the doctor. "If she had been left any longer, then perhaps it would have been another story."

Calista's eyes glowed with tears as her eyes fell on the tiny baby, not understanding how something like this could happen. "Who would do this?"

"A desperate mother perhaps," the doctor replied, thinking out loud. "It happens more than you think, especially if the parents are immigrants. I'll have the nurse call a local orphanage to see if they can take her in once she's discharged."

"An orphanage?" Calista's heart dropped at the words, frowning as she stared at the baby. "She's so small, so innocent."

"There's nothing more we can do, Calista."

The doctor left then as Calista remained with the baby. Calista picked her up from the crib, holding the delicate human in her arms as she sat down on the seat in the treatment room. The blanket remained wrapped tightly around the baby as Calista rocked her, staring down at the sleeping infant.

"You do not deserve how harshly life has treated you," Calista told the baby.

The baby opened her eyes with irises a dark green. Calista found herself fascinated, feeling the tiny baby steal her heart at that moment. Tears slipped down Calista's cheeks as a smile broke out on her face. The fingers of her free hand reach out, stroking the baby's golden toned face until she fell asleep again.
