CALISTA DID NOT HESITATE TO PASS through a portal, leaving it open for Druig to follow. In the centre of the village, Calista's eyes fell on Nina, who was helping guide humans into the main hall with Sersi quick to follow, sealing them inside to protect them.
A Deviant appeared, striking Sersi with its tail, who went crashing into the house opposite. Then, the creature rounded on Nina, mouth open in a snarl as a second Deviant appeared.
Slipping through another portal, Calista reached her granddaughter, putting up a force field just before the Deviant's tail flicked around to strike Nina.
The golden shield darkened from the impact, causing the Deviant to stumble backwards.
"Nina, you have to leave," Calista instructed her.
"No," stated Nina. "Not without you."
"I don't have time to argue," Calista said, using her free hand to create a portal behind the two as she continued to block the Deviants attack. "Leave. Now."
Nina, however, shook her head. "I can help."
Calista was about ready to start shouting, but gunshots had echoed, striking the two Deviants in the area. The Deviant that was fighting Calista fell back, taking shot after shot as Calista closed the portal to her family home. Angry, the Deviants attacked the humans, causing Calista's heart to break.
"No..." Nina reacted the same.
"Stay back," Calista told her.
Dropping the shield that protected her granddaughter, Calista was quick to focus her power on protecting the humans from being hit. Seeing them, Calista couldn't believe that they were being forced to stay to fight as they held shotguns. Yet, Druig was there with them, jumping over the Deviants tail as he picked up a shotgun himself, joining the fight.
"Druig! Let the humans go!" Calista shouted at him over the chaos.
Calista watched as he jumped over the Deviant, twisting to shoot the creature. With the second one close by, Calista rounded, creating a shield for herself before the Deviants tail struck her. Using her shield, Calista pushed the forcefield out, slicing the tail from the creature as it cried out.
A gunshot echoed from close by to Calista, striking the Deviants face as Calista's eyes fell on Nina, who had picked up a shotgun that had fallen from a human. Not afraid, Nina fired again, leaving Calista in a state of shock.
Behind them, a tree made of steel fell, trapping the Deviant as Calista's focus remained on the one she had been fighting. It charged for Nina but crashed into Calista's forcefield, where it fell, falling through a portal as the Deviant appeared in the sky, crashing through the trees with full force.
"Druig," Calista rounded on her previous lover, furious with him. "I swear, if you don't let the humans go—"
"Please," Sersi pleaded with him. "I know you're better than this."
