I rocked in the rocking chair with my sleeping pup. Mical's scent wafted to me as he quietly entered the room,
"Did she fall asleep again?"
I nodded and offered a small smile to him. He smiled back before closing the door to the nursery and leaning against the wall next to it,
"I actually wanted to speak with you, Cyrus."
I nodded for him to continue. I had an idea what this conversation would entail, and I'd already braced myself for it. He cleared his throat quietly,
"I'm actually surprised as to why you haven't confronted me yourself."
I tilted my head,
"About why you know so much about my family? I figured you must have been close, though I don't remember meeting you personally. I think my dad spoke about a friend of his that he called Uncle Mical. I was always with my brother and my dad was always busy with the pack, along with my mom. My guess is you guys always intended to meet up, but life got in the way momentarily. It must be hard seeing your dead friend's child live in the same house as you."
He shook his head,
"Not at all. If anything, I'm relieved. It hurts more to think that the entirety of his existence was erased. With you being alive, that's not the case. You actually eased a lot of the pain I'd been feeling. And you're right. We wanted to meet up. Actually, we wanted you and Leo to meet each other. Hopefully, have a friendship like the two of us did."
I smiled to myself,
"The Mother works in strange ways, huh?"
He gave a short laugh,
"Yeah. She does. I...I hope you don't hold it against me. Not coming to you sooner."
"I don't. I wouldn't. I have a feeling you and my dad were very close."
He looked at the ground, speaking almost to himself,
"We grew up together. He was there when I met Leo's mother, and now they're both gone."
He took a breath before meeting my eyes again,
"When...when they announced that your pack had been attacked and destroyed, I flew there that same night. I did my best to help them take account of every registered pack member. When they told me that your body was missing, I even helped with the search party. What had happened had left me sick to my stomach, and I was so desperate to help you in any way possible...I would have stayed much longer, but then unlicensed hunters attacked the pack. Lei, my mate, died in the attack. I had to go home and help my son and the pack deal with the loss. If I didn't have Leo, I probably would have given up on everything right then and there."
My eyes stung slightly as I listened to my father-in-law. I had no idea anyone even cared that I was missing. That anyone had looked for me. That anyone had noticed our small pack's destruction. I thought they just assumed that everyone died, and that there were no survivors. Mical continued,
"The night Leo brought you here, you looked so familiar. You actually reminded me of your father with that blue/black hair and that white tuft, but those eyes were straight from your mother. Still, I didn't want to get my hopes up. After so many years, I had started to fear the worse. Then I heard your name. I was so happy. You were found. You were safe again. And then Leo explained to me about your injuries and the way you interacted with others...I felt so sick with everything. If only I'd looked harder....maybe you wouldn't-
"You did the best you could, and I'm sure my parents and brother appreciated it. I know that I do. The fact that anyone cared at all is a foreign idea to me. You should know that Marren has an extensive network of people that he uses to keep under the radar. Don't beat yourself up over it too much. You weren't the only person who couldn't locate him."
