Our schedule had been jam-packed for the past week as we prepared for the preliminary rounds of Winter Fest. The grading system was pretty simple. The farther you went, the higher your grade. Because of this, Cy and I had been training nonstop. We'd never actually fought side by side while shifted. In fact, the only time we'd even remotely partnered up in battle was when we were attacked while he was pregnant. When he'd gone partially feral. I shook the thought from my head as Ari nipped my ankle playfully before giving me a questioning look as he spoke through the pack link,
You seem distracted. Are you alright?
I shook my head,
I'm fine. Just thinking.
He studied me for a bit, before walking 'til his wolf was positioned in front of mine,
Do you want to continue warming up, or would you like to wait on the young Luna?
I thought for a moment but didn't have a chance to come to a decision as I was knocked to the ground by a blue/black blur. We rolled for a bit, my baby's scent surrounding me as we did so. Our tangled bodies stopped with me standing over his beautiful wolf. My chest swelled with adoration and affection as I watched him below. He was on his back, his soft belly fur exposed. A sign of his trust in me. His pale blue eyes watched me with a mixture of contentment and amusement. I licked his cheek and neck, rubbing my muzzle against his neck and scenting him before stepping back so that he could get up. He purred and stayed close enough that our sides brushed against each other.
We walked over to Ari and dad's wolves, that were watching us in amusement. Cy yawned before shaking his fur out and becoming more serious. I followed his lead, looking towards our sparring partners. My dad huffed while Ari began to pace back and forth slightly before suddenly rushing forwards. Cy reacted quickly, meeting him halfway while my dad suddenly appeared in front of me. I forgot he could be that fast. Dodging his first swipe, I aimed for his leg. He jumped out of the way before I felt a nip on my shoulder. I huffed and rammed him with my shoulder, pushing him back slightly. I'd noticed that Cy had done the same to Ari, only with double the force and accuracy, knocking him off his feet. My nudge to my dad had pushed him right into the path of his Beta, though.
They tumbled into a clump for a second before quickly separating, each giving nods of acknowledgment towards us. Cy nodded back before glancing at me. I heard a single word through our link, 'switch', and we both rushed them. Right before we came in contact with them, we switched targets, confusing them momentarily. Cy used his dexterity to stop just before reaching my dad before slipping between his legs and springing up, knocking him off his feet with a confused growl. I, on the other hand, tackled Ari to the ground, using my larger size against him. We each held our opponents down with our teeth at their throats for a second before stepping back. Ari got up and shook out his fur,
Well done, you two.
My dad nodded in agreement,
Yes, excellent job. Being able to utilize and recognize each other's strengths will be very helpful during the competition.
I nodded back as Cy walked over to me. Just before he reached me, he looked past me; his eyes squinting as if focused on something far away. I turned and followed his gaze to see the bushes at the far end of the field shifting wildly before a group of pups ran out. I started to dismiss them as playing until I heard one of them scream in fear. Cy blurred past me as I followed. The paw steps of my dad and Ari followed behind the two of us as we ran towards the pups. As the pups ran towards us, the reason for their fear burst through the bushes as well. Feral rogues. More of them. On top of that, they weren't just wolves anymore. There were a few cougars and even a few deer mixed in. I watched in horror as feral deer got much too close and prepared to skewer a little girl. Cy let out a commanding growl, drawing the attention of the feral creatures. They discarded their focus on the pups, now pointing their aggression toward our group.
As they began to rush towards us, warriors burst through the treeline as well, attacking from the back. The ferals now turned their attention to the new threat. Good. We reached the pups and motioned for them to get on our backs. The poor kids were drenched in fear scent and slightly shaking as they rushed towards us. One, in particular, looked a bit familiar, but I didn't focus on that. We needed to get these pups to the infirmary and then tell their parents. What were they doing running around in the woods without adults to begin with? After the nine pups were settled on our backs, we ran to the infirmary. The pups had been running on pure adrenaline and picked up a few cuts and bruises from the trees and bushes. We reached the infirmary and dropped the kids off with some nurses and two doctors before leaving to shift and put clothes on. When I came back, I saw Cy already sitting in the lobby with that familiar boy on his lap. Seeing them interact, I remembered the pup's name, Skylar.
He was an orphan that had hit it off with Cy while my baby was still pregnant. He often sat with Cy when he was still bedridden, but I hadn't been fully introduced to him since we'd never been there at the same time, which was always strange, since I rarely left his side. Either way, I wasn't too concerned about that. What I wanted to know was why a group of seven-year-olds were running through the acres of woods our pack owns with no supervision. I walked towards the two as they spoke in hushed tones. Before reaching them, I couldn't help but admire how gentle Cy was with Skylar. If I didn't know any better, I'd think they were related. As I got closer, I could hear their conversation,
"We didn't mean to go that far, but then James said that if we couldn't even do that, then we weren't ever going to be warriors. I knew he was just being mean, but I just wanted to shut him up. Just once. He's always saying stuff like that; like he's better than everyone."
"I know people like that can be very...annoying, but you can't prove them wrong by putting yourself in danger. What if you were a bit slower? Or if you got lost because of the fear? If those ferals had cornered you, there would have been nothing any of us could do. If you'd gotten hurt or worse; I would have felt so sad, Sky. Remember that being strong isn't just about physical strength. It's mental strength as well. The mental strength to stand up against peer pressure, especially. Okay?"
Skylar nodded and looked down in remorse. A ghost of a smile played on Cy's lips as he ran his fingers through Skylar's hair. I didn't have anything to say after that so I simply sit down beside them. Skylar looked up in surprise as I sat near them. His eyes widened with a look of realization before he pointed at me,
"You're the next Alpha!"
I chuckled at the kid before nodding,
"Yep."
His eyes sparkled with admiration as Cy let out a slight chuckle,
"Cool! Um, so your Cy Cy's mate?"
I nodded again and glanced at Cy as I heard the nickname. He only shrugged helplessly, and I chuckled. Skylar's gaze suddenly took on a serious expression,
"Are you nice to Cy Cy?"
My eyes widened at the pup's seriousness. I had a feeling that if I gave the wrong answer, his entire perception of me would go down the drain in seconds. I nodded and looked towards Cy lovingly,
"I could never be mean to my precious mate. He means everything to me."
Cy smiled, and Skylar studied me for a moment before he was satisfied. After nodding to himself, he smiled widely at me,
"I'm Skylar, Cy Cy's little brother. Right, Cy Cy?"
Cyrus gave his signature smile as he nodded indulgingly at the pup,
"That's right, Sky. And don't allow anyone to tell you otherwise. If they do, let me know. I'll take care of it."
I smiled at the interaction before sticking my hand out at the pup,
"Well, it's nice to finally meet my brother-in-law. I promise I will always be nice to your big brother."
Skylar smiled widely as he took my hand and shook it.
