"Ashton time for breakfast." My mom called from downstairs awaking me from my peaceful slumber. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes I called back to her. "Ok mom be down in a minute." I threw my legs over to the side of my full sized bed onto my cold floor, stretching on the way to my bathroom. After I washed my face and brushed my hair I threw on my black boot cut pants and purple butterfly shirt that showed my right shoulder along with my ashy brown boots. I looked up in the mirror. I was excited, today I was going last minute shopping with my best friends Kayla and Ashley. Then in two days I would be attending Jefferson County High as a Jefferson Raging Raven.
I had perfectly straight, long, blonde hair. Because I had a slight tan, my skin appeared golden in most lighting. My cheeks were rosy and my lips were a close match. I had high cheeks bones and white teeth.
Distracted by thoughts I slammed my knee into the counter. "OWW!" I yelled as fell to the floor in an effort to remove some of the pain.
"What is going on up there?" my mom called obviously annoyed that I have taken over 20 minutes in the bathroom. "Nothing mom" I called to her as I limped my way down stairs. "There you are sweetie I thought someone was upstairs trying to kidnap you." I rolled my eyes. My mom was a pale woman with long blonde hair and a bright smile. She was kind hearted but could be stern when needed to be. She had the same green eyes as I did and stood at 5'6.
Last year, this morning would look like a normal family breakfast. Mom would be in the kitchen finishing up breakfast, my dad would have a bagel and a cup of coffee with a newspaper in his hand, and my brother would be sitting at the table waiting for the food to arrive. But my family is nowhere near normal. My dad left while I was the magnet school, my brother was always bruised up and beaten, and since the fight, my mother was very cautious, scared even. I was the most normal person in my family.
"So you excited for school?"
I nodded to her then said "Yeah, I can't wait to see what it's like in a real high school." I shouted. "Ok well here is your fried egg sandwich" handing me it.
"Thanks mom" I said taking a big bite of the sandwich.
We talked for about an hour, while I ate my breakfast and she told me everything I need to know about being a junior and what kinds of people there are, and who I should and shouldn't be friends with. She also gave me tips on how to pass my classes and several other things that I personally thought were useless; like don't sit in the back of the bus or don't ever reach under the desks. Right outside my house were my best friends, Kayla and Ashley or I sometimes call 'Kay and Ash, "Ashton gets your tail in the car we got to go" called Ashley from her pink and black Mustang.
"Mom that's them I got to go" I said with a shocked face because my brother William was coming down the stairs, which was something new because he normally stayed in his room. "That's fine sweetie go ahead, go have fun, go be a junior." Staring William down curious on why he chose to come out of hiding I nodded to mom "Thanks mom." As I said placing my plate in the sink and kissed her on the cheek before I went high tailing my way out the door jumping into Ashley 's car accidently kicking Kayla in the head as I jumped in the back seat "ouch!!" after I settled into the back seat I noticed that I kicked Kay. "Oh my god I'm so sorry Kayla!"
Kayla was a pretty girl. She had blonde hair that was naturally curly. It was an inch or two past her chin. Her teeth were white which I find funny because she's always drinking coffee. Her lips were a sweet color of pink and her eyes were green. Now Ashley on the other hand is stunning. (no offense Kayla) Her hair is long, black with brown highlights, and she usually curls it into a long, single, spiral. Her eyes are a striking color of brown. she always wears makeup on her eyes and the eyeliner and mascara make them pop!
"I'm fine, no huge damage just maybe a broken skull." Shaking my head in a low position knowing that, that little kick would not bring her a broken skull. "You want a broken skull I can give you one." I said slapping her upside the head in a friendly, playful way and she did the same to me and it just started going back and forth. "Okay kitty cats, stop pretending each other is a ball of yarn and buckle up I'm ready to go shopping." Kayla and I both took turn pretending 'she was our ball of yarn' by whacking her upside the head then buckling our seatbelts
"whoa!!"
"What!" Ashley and I both yelled
"Is that William?" Kayla said pointing to him
"Yeah. Strange isn't it, why he chose to come out of his room I don't know."
"Where's your dad?" Ashley asked
I sighed. "I'm not sure. He and my mom had a fight before I came back from the magnet school and he left.
They both apologized but I brushed their words off. "I need and want no pity please."
My brother ,William, looked at me and took in a deep breath filled with worry and went back to doing whatever he was doing
"What's got his sticks?" Ashley asked.
My reply, "I don't know, mom never asks questions so why should I?"
"Oh ok well can we get going Ash?" Kayla asked.
Ashley nodded and began to drive. Within the thirty minutes it took to get to the mall the two had plenty of time to ask me questions about the magnet school. It went a little like this.
"What was it like, was there any cute boys, how were the classes?" My response
"Unique and busy, plenty of them I was even asked out by a few, they were difficult because the teachers were very fast paced." After a boat load of questions we finally arrived.
"Yay were here!" Kay said unbuckling her seat belt and jumping around excitedly
"Calm down Kay, god." I said
"Sorry but I haven't been on a shopping spree all summer."
"Oh my gosh Kayla you poor-" Ashley started to say.
"Guys shut up and let's go!" I said interrupting Ashley.
"Ok Ms. Bossy." Kayla smirked
"Call me that again Kayla, I dare you" I said giving her a 'go on ahead, do it and you're going to regret it' look. She shut up real quick. I had that effect on people. If I gave them a certain stare they would jump to obey. I didn't like to do it but I had to sometimes to have things go my way. But of course, it never worked on William or my mom.
