Peter Parker wasn't ignoring his best friend. At least not intentionally. The intense guilt he felt for the death of his uncle was an unbearable weight on his shoulders, and though it would feel better to shed some of that weight by confiding in Maya, he didn't want to burden her.

So when he passed her in the school corridor, he kept his eyes glued to the floor.

Maya understood this. She felt a similar way after her mother had died in a mugging-gone-wrong when she was 13. She wanted to scream and cry and curse at this world for doing this to her. Although she grieved in a totally different way than her best friend. She couldn't bare the thought of being alone and constantly sought out the company of someone, usually being Peter.

She didn't blame Peter for grieving the way he did and shutting her out. She knew he'd come back to her when he was ready.

And she would wait with arms open ready for him.

What Maya didn't know was Peter was dealing with the loss of his Uncle in more ways than she thought.

Peter was looking for revenge. He wanted to make Ben's killer pay. He wanted to see the fear in their eyes that he saw in Uncle Ben's when he took his last breath. He wanted to see the hurt on his face that Peter saw in his own when he looked at his reflection, the same hurt that his Aunt May was so desperately trying to hid.

He was spending his days after school looking for the man. With the police sketch memorized, he roamed the streets and alley ways of New York in hopes of finding him.

With no luck yet finding the man, he had got himself caught up catching other thugs in the process and now had the threat over his head of these men knowing what he looked like.

And with that he acquired a new disguise and an alias.

Spiderman.
