Y/N POV
The next morning you wake up way too early. A look to your watch tells you that it's 4 am, so you have plenty of time before you have to go to work. Although you're really tired you know that you won't get anymore sleep. There are too many thoughts keeping you awake.
Lizzie was pretty drunk when you all were in the club but she wasn't that drunk that she couldn't remember the kiss, was she?
God I finally kissed her and she doesn't even remember it! Or does she and she didn't like it? I really just want to talk to her about it. Maybe there's chance, just the slightest, that she likes me too.
After thinking another hour about how you could talk to her you finally decide to get out of bed and go for a run. You get back after around 5 miles, hop in the shower and get dressed. Camouflage pants and a white shirt. Nothing special. You make a nice muesli and shove it hastily into your mouth. Eating everything in a few minutes. After putting your bowl in the sink, you grab your jacket and your keys and leave your apartment. The drive to Lizzie was shorter than it is usually. You didn't even pay attention to the traffic around you. Do you know that feeling when you start driving and you suddenly arrive without knowing if every traffic light was green because you were way too much in your head? Yeah, that happened. But you decided that you'll talk to her today. This evening to be exactly. Maybe you could take her to the beach again. Hell, maybe you'll just ask her out. There's nothing to lose, is there? Well, okay you could lose your job. But Lizzie wouldn't do that.
"Hey, Y/N.", Lizzie startles you. You didn't even realize that she's already waiting for you.
"Hi, sorry I was-"
"Deep in thoughts? Yeah, I came to that conclusion when you didn't react to my first hello.", she chuckles.
"Sorry, yeah there's a lot on my mind right now.", you rub your neck.
"Don't worry, it's alright. What are you thinking about? Maybe I can help you?"
"Oh no, you don't have to – well, actually it might be nice to talk about it with you. But maybe this evening? When you're done with work?", you ask.
"So, if it's not something I can help with right now, it must be serious."
"Well, serious might be an exaggeration.", you interrupt her.
"Whatever, you know I'm here for you.", she smiles. "But tonight is not a good time. Maybe tomorrow?", she suggests as she gets in the car.
You get in as well and start the engine.
"Why? What are you doing?", you ask curiously.
"I have a date.", she smiles brightly.
What? You mind gets blank and your heart sinks.
"Sorry what?", you ask ignoring the lump that forms in your throat.
"His name is Robbie and he's a musician! You know the band Milo Greene? He's in it! MK – my sister – gave him my number and he texted me last night. I was skeptical at first but we texted the whole night and he's really sweet. He said he can't wait to meet me, so we're having out first date tonight.", Lizzie tells you excitedly.
"Oh wow, that's uh fast.", you reply.
"Well, yes maybe. But what should I wait for?", she shrugs.
For me. You should wait for me.
You force a smile. "No, you're right. I hope you have fun tonight."
"Thank you.", she gives you a sweet smile.
The rest of the drive is silent. You can't wrap your head around the fact that she kissed you literally two days ago and now she's having a date with someone else. So, either she really forgot the kiss or she wants to forget it because it meant absolutely nothing to her.
"So, here we are.", You say as you park the car. "I'll leave the car here, so you can get home safely tonight. Have fun!"
"Thank you, Y/N. I'll tell you everything tomorrow!"
Looking forward to it. Yay.
"Yeah, sure. Have a good day!"
She waves goodbye and you give her a last smile before turning around and slowly walking away. What the hell did just happen? Did you seriously wish her fun on a date with someone who isn't you? But what is she doing? Why does she tell you all of that? You take your phone out of your pocket and call the only person who can help you with this mess.
It rings a few times, before she picks up.
"Hey, Y/N!", she greets you excitedly.
"Hey, Kara.", you can't help but sound sad.
"What's wrong?", she immediately notices your mood.
"Do you have some time to talk and maybe pick me up?"
"Yeah sure, lucky for you I'm in LA anyways. Send me your location and I'm on my way."
"Thank you! See you later."
"Bye bye."
You send her your location and wait for her by a nearby café. You order a cappuccino and sit down. While you mindlessly drink your coffee, you watch the people around you. What is going on in their heads? In their lives? For you they are just side characters. None of them is really important to you, although you would help them immediately if they asked for your help. That's just who you are. You were in the Army and almost lost your life to protect your country. Damn right, you were in the Army. Fighting the Taliban and risking your life every day! And now you're here, unable to confess your feelings to the woman you like.
"Hey Y/N!", Kara greets you startling you once again. I really need to live more outside of my head.
"Kara!", you say with relief. You stand up to hug her. Her hugs are the best. It's like they're promising that although everything might be really hard right now, there will be better times again.
"Do you wanna have a coffee too? A latte macchiato?"
"Sure.", she replies easily.
"Could we get two latte macchiati, Sir?", you ask the waiter as she walks past you.
"Of course.", he says and walks back inside the shop to make your coffee.
"You already had a coffee.", Kara notices. "Don't you think that two could be too much?"
You shake your head. "There's no such thing like too much coffee."
Kara laughs. "Well, if you say so. But, what do you want to talk about? Did something happen with Lizzie?"
"How do you know that?", you ask surprised.
She gives you a look. "I'm your best friend. I know what's on your mind. At least most of the time. So, what's up?"
You take a deep breath before you start. "Well, we all went to a club two days ago."
"Who's we and why a club? You hate clubs.", Kara interrupts you.
"Scarlett, Florence, Lizzie and me. The club is new. It opened a few weeks ago and they wanted to check it out. And I still hate clubs but I'm Lizzie's bodyguard and I was there to protect them. It was basically just work. Well, anyway Lizzie and Florence got pretty drunk, and Scarlett decided to take Florence back home. I stayed a little while longer at the club with Lizzie. We even danced together and for a short time I forgot how much I hate clubs. But when she couldn't even stand anymore, I decided to take her back home. So we took the motorcycle-"
"Ooh the motorcycle.", Kara teases.
You roll your eyes. "Yes, the motorcycle. Well long story short – I took her home and she kissed me."
"She kissed you!", Kara squeals. "That's great!"
When she sees that you reaction isn't the same as hers, she adds "Or isn't it?"
"I thought it was great. I mean she's a really good kisser. She even wanted me to spend the night with her, but she was completely drunk and I didn't want to take advantage of that. I mean what if she woke up the next day and completely regret it? She was upset about it, but I went home anyway. And when I picked her up the next day she said that she didn't remember anything from the night."
"Okay that is weird. I mean, was she really that drunk?", Kara asks."I don't know. But guess what she's doing tonight?"
"I have no idea. What is she doing?", Kara wants to know and furrows her brows.
"She has a date!"
"She what?!", Kara shouts.
"Yeah, I had the same reaction! Well, internally. I didn't want to show her how much that hurts me. But it does hurt. And I just don't understand how she can kiss me and then date someone else the next day? I mean the kiss probably didn't mean anything to her."
"This is so fucked up. Why did she even tell you about the date? That's so unfair."
"Well, I asked her if she's free tonight because I wanted to talk to her, soo.."
"It's wrong anyway. God, I don't even know what to say. I'm just so mad at her. She shouldn't do that with you. Do you know who she will meet tonight?"
"His name is Robbie and he's a musician and he's sooo nice.", you mimic Lizzie's voice.
"I hate him already.", Kara says. "Why did she even tell you all of these things? It's like she's trying to hurt you on purpose! I mean you're finally open for someone new and she just destroys that."
"Don't ask me, I have no clue. But it was probably a bad idea anyway. I'm better off by myself. Less drama and less possibilities to get hurt. I'm just going to bottle everything up and I'll be fine.", you shrug.
"No, don't do that! I mean, you like her a lot. Fight for her! It's just one date. He is not immediately her boyfriend. Maybe you're lucky and she doesn't even like him."
"I won't put energy in something that clearly isn't meant to be. I don't want someone who doesn't want me.", you reply stubbornly.
"You say that now, but I know you'll be hurting every time she tells you about him or you'll see them together. I know, you're good at swallowing your feelings but you can't turn them off completely."
You scoff. "We'll see."
Kara's phone pings and she takes a quick look. "Shit, uhm I gotta go.""Is everything okay?", you ask concerned.
She gives you a reassuring smile. "Yes, it's just a work thing. Shall I drop you off at your apartment?"
"That would be great! But you know, you can tell me everything."
"If I need you help, I'll call you, I promise. And if you want to talk about this whole Lizzie situation, just text me, okay?"
"Sure, thank you!"
You pay for the coffees and follow Kara to her car. The ride back home is silent. But in a comfortable way. You don't feel the need to say something, you just enjoy her presence knowing she'll always be there.
